Altea is one of those places where it is worth thinking carefully about where you stay, because the town and the coast offer quite different experiences. If what you are looking for is atmosphere, narrow streets and the famous blue dome of the church, the best thing is to stay in the old town, the Centro Histórico. There you will find small, charming apartments, but keep in mind that parking is complicated and the slopes are steep. If you prefer to walk down to the beach and have everything at hand, the El Puerto area or the seafront promenade is more practical: there is more restaurant options and the terrain is flat. On the other hand, if you travel with family or seek tranquility, the urbanizations of the Sierra de Altea or the Altea Hills area offer villas and houses with pool and views of the Mediterranean, although you will need a car for sure to go down to the center.
The main difference between one area and another is the balance between comfort and atmosphere. In the old town and the center, you have everything within walking distance, but you pay more for less square meters and suffer the noise in high season. In the outskirts, you gain space, privacy and often better views, but you lose independence if you do not bring a vehicle. As for prices, the low season (from October to April, except Easter) is when rentals drop quite a bit: you can find apartments from 84 euros per night, while the average price is around 217. If your date is flexible, avoid July and August, which is when prices skyrocket and minimum stays are usually one week. May and June, or September, are the best balance between climate and rates.
To get there, the easiest is to fly to Alicante-Elche, which is about 45 minutes by car, or to Valencia, an hour and a half. From Alicante airport you have direct buses to Benidorm and from there a taxi or local bus to Altea, but it is advisable to rent a car if you stay outside the center. Within the town, moving on foot is normal; to go to the nearby coves or to the beach of la Olla, a car or a bicycle will come in handy. Before booking, check carefully if the accommodation has an elevator (many old buildings do not have one), if the price includes final cleaning and sheets, and if parking is included or must be paid separately. Also check recent reviews about noise and insulation, because in the historic center thin walls are common. With 412 available accommodations, among apartments (287), houses (67), villas (58) and hotels (15), you have room to compare, but do not trust only the photos: read the cancellation conditions before taking the step.
The average price is around 217 euros per night, although you can find options from 84 euros if you search in low season or in advance. Apartments are the most economical option, while villas raise the average quite a bit.
May, June and September are the ideal months: you have pleasant weather for beach and pool, and prices are much lower than in July and August. In October you can also find good prices, but the water is already cooler.
The Centro Histórico or the seafront promenade are the best options, because you have everything within walking distance: beach, restaurants and supermarkets. The urbanizations of the sierra are beautiful, but without a car it will be uncomfortable for you to go down to the town daily.
The nearest airport is Alicante-Elche, about 45 minutes by car. You can combine a bus to Benidorm and then a taxi, but the most practical is to rent a car, especially if you stay in a villa or house on the outskirts.
Always look at the cancellation policy, because it varies a lot between owners: some offer free refund until a week before, others do not return anything. Also check if the final price includes cleaning, tourist taxes and if parking is paid or free.
