Alora is a white village in the Guadalhorce Valley, about 40 minutes from Malaga city, which usually goes unnoticed by mass tourism. Here you have 108 accommodations, with an average price of 155 euros per night and the cheapest from 53 euros. Most are vacation homes (39) and apartments (29), followed by bed and breakfasts (16), villas (13), guest houses (8), and only two hotels. The average category is around 3.7 stars, so don't expect big resorts: the charm lies in the rural and authentic.
To choose an area, first think about what you want to do. If you come to see the Castillo de las Tres Torres and the old town, the best is to stay in the center, where the Hostal Don Joaquín Alora or the Hostal Delia are. From there you can walk to everything, but keep in mind that there are slopes and narrow streets. If you prefer tranquility and nature, look for guest houses or villas on the outskirts, near the river or the Guadalhorce greenway. Apartments, like the Apartamentos Candela Alora, are usually well distributed between the town and the station area, which is flatter and more practical if you go by car. The main difference is noise and parking: in the center it's hard to park, but you have bars and shops at hand; outside, you gain calm and views, but you need a vehicle for almost everything.
As for prices, high season is from June to September, when the heat is intense and nights go up. If you want to pay less, look between October and May, especially from Monday to Thursday, because many accommodations lower rates during the week. Spring and autumn weekends fill up with people from Malaga who come for hiking, so book in advance. To get there, the most comfortable is by car via the A-357, but there is also a commuter train from Malaga (line C-2) that drops you at Alora station, about 20 minutes walking from the center. Once there, getting around on foot is feasible for the old town, but to go to the reservoirs or neighboring villages you need a car or taxi.
Before booking, check three things: if the accommodation has heating or air conditioning, because old stone houses get cold in winter and hot in summer; if parking is included or must be paid separately; and if the kitchen is complete, because many apartments and houses advertise it but then lack the oven or washing machine. Also look at recent reviews about cleanliness and noise, and confirm if the owner lives in the same building or gives you keys via a lockbox, because that changes check-in flexibility. With that clear, Alora is a great base to discover the interior of Malaga without paying coastal prices.
From October to May, avoiding bridges and Holy Week. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends, and in winter you can find rooms from 53 euros if you book in advance.
The center of the town, near the square and the Hostal Don Joaquín, because you have everything on foot and the train station is about 20 minutes walking. If you stay on the outskirts or in the station area, you will depend on taxis or walking more.
By car via the A-357, about 40 minutes, or by commuter train line C-2 from Malaga Centro-Alameda, which takes about 50 minutes. The train drops you at Alora station, and from there you can go up to the town on foot or by taxi.
If you come for hiking routes, a vacation home or a villa with kitchen and garden. If you just want to sleep and explore the town, a hostel or guest house in the center. Apartments are a good option for stays of several days.
Most require a card to guarantee the reservation and allow free cancellation up to 48 or 72 hours before arrival. Some vacation homes require a damage deposit that is returned upon departure, and in high season they may ask for a night's advance.
