If what you're looking for is atmosphere, restaurants, and being able to walk everywhere, the historic center is your place: cobbled streets, squares with terraces, and a walk up to the castle that's worth it at sunset. That said, parking is difficult and the houses tend to be old, with stairs and little sound insulation. The other big option is the coast, especially toward Aiguablava and Fornells: here villas and houses with pools predominate, many with sea views, but you need a car to go down to the coves or to buy bread. In between, the Palafrugell road and developments such as Sa Riera or Es Racó offer a middle ground: more peace and quiet than the center, some parking, and reasonable access to the beaches, although almost always uphill.

The main difference between areas is the price and the type of accommodation. In the old town you'll find small apartments and charming hotels, with an average of 150 to 250 euros per night. On the coast, villas and vacation homes push the average up to 488 euros, and it's not unusual in July and August for them to ask more than 600. If you want the price to come down, avoid the central weeks of August: at the end of June and in September accommodations tend to be 20 or 30 percent cheaper, and the sea is still fine. It's also worth checking whether the accommodation includes bed linen and towels, because in many vacation homes they charge you separately for them, and whether the final price includes cleaning fees, which are sometimes surprising.

To get there, the most practical option is by car: from Girona you take the C-66 to Palafrugell and then the GI-653, about 45 minutes. By plane, Girona airport is 50 kilometers away and Barcelona's is about 130. If you come without a car, there are buses from Barcelona to Palafrugell, but from there the developments and coves are poorly connected, so I recommend renting one. To get around Begur, a car is almost essential unless you stay in the center, and even then, to go to coves like Aiguablava or Sa Tuna, it's better to drive or take a taxi. Before booking, check three things: whether the accommodation has air conditioning (many old houses don't), whether the pool is private or communal, and whether the kitchen is equipped for cooking, because in summer eating out every day blows up the budget.
