Empuriabrava has more than 600 vacation rentals, so the choice depends mainly on what you are looking for. If you want to be close to the water and the maritime atmosphere, the port and canal area is the most in demand: there you will find mostly apartments and some villas with moorings, ideal if you enjoy an evening stroll or bringing your own boat. On the other hand, if you prefer peace and somewhat lower prices, the residential area inland, near the campsite or the golf course, offers holiday homes and townhouses with gardens, a ten-minute walk from the center. The beach, for its part, is to the east, and the first-line apartments are the ones that rise the most in July and August; if you don't mind walking a bit, staying three or four streets back can save you quite a bit.
The main difference between areas is the distance to the sea and to the commercial center, which is where restaurants and shops are concentrated. The port area is the liveliest and also the most expensive, with an average price per night of around 250 euros in high season. The beach area, between the Marítima and the bay, is more family-friendly and has direct access to the sand, but the apartments are older. The southern area, towards the Muga river, is the quietest and offers the best value for money, with spacious houses and tree-lined streets. If you travel in June or September, prices drop by up to 40% compared to August, and in May or October you can find nights from 54 euros, although the water is cooler.
To get there, the most convenient option is by car: from Girona it's 40 minutes via the AP-7, and from Barcelona, an hour and a half. If you come by plane, Girona-Costa Brava airport is 50 kilometers away, and from there you can take a taxi or a bus to Figueres and then a local connection. Once in Empuriabrava, getting around on foot is easy in the center and the port, but for the beach or the southern developments, you'd better rent a bicycle or use the car, because the distances are long and public transport is scarce. Before booking, check whether the accommodation includes bed linen and towels, because many apartments do not provide them, and confirm whether the final price includes cleaning and the energy surcharge, which is sometimes charged separately. Also look at reviews about noise, especially in the port apartments, and whether the building has an elevator, because many villas and houses are two-story.
The average price is around 211 euros per night, but the minimum drops to 54 euros outside the season. May, June, and September are the most economical months within the high season, and October or April offer even lower rates.
June and September are the best months: the climate is pleasant, the water is acceptable, and there are fewer crowds than in July and August. If you are looking for atmosphere and parties, July and August are the option, but assuming higher prices and crowded beaches.
For families with children, the beach area is the most practical due to direct access to the sand. For couples or groups who want to go out at night, the port and canals are ideal, and for those seeking silence, the southern area near the river is the best.
By car is the simplest, with direct access from the AP-7 from Girona or Barcelona. Once there, the center can be covered on foot, but for the beach or the outlying developments, it is advisable to rent a bicycle or use the car, because there is no good internal bus service.
Check whether the price includes cleaning, bed linen, and towels, because many apartments charge them separately. Also review the cancellation policy and whether they require a deposit, which is usually returned upon departure, and confirm if there is a surcharge for energy or pets.
