Empuriabrava has more than 634 rental accommodations, and most are apartments (473), followed by villas (72) and holiday homes (64). Hotels barely reach nine, so the bulk of the offer is privately managed. This greatly shapes the experience: you'll find everything from studios with sea views to townhouses on canals, with prices ranging from 54 euros per night to an average of 206. The average category is around 3.1 stars, so don't expect great hotel services in most options; what you gain is space, a kitchen and a more residential location.
If you don't know where to start, first think about what you want to do. The port and canal area is the most sought after: staying in an apartment or villa with moorings lets you keep your car or boat nearby, and the atmosphere is quiet except in July and August. The bay area, toward the beach of Empuriabrava, is more practical if you're going with children or want to walk to the sand; here apartments such as the Apartamentos Empuriabrava Maurici Park or the Aptos. Comte D´Empuries abound. If you prefer silence and don't mind taking the car for everything, the inland urbanizations or those toward the Empordà offer larger houses for less money, such as the 22B puigmal D. The main difference between them is not only the price, but also the noise, the parking and the distance to services.
As for prices, high season (from June 15 to September 15) multiplies rates by three or four. If you can, travel in May, June or September: the weather is still good for the beach and prices drop considerably, especially on weekdays. To get there, the most comfortable option is the car: from Girona it's 40 minutes via the AP-7 or the N-II, and from Barcelona a little more than an hour and a half. Girona-Costa Brava airport is 50 km away, and Barcelona's is about 150. Once there, getting around by car is almost essential, because the distances between the beach, the center and the canals are long and public transport is scarce. Before booking, check whether the accommodation includes bed linen and towels (many don't), whether parking is private or paid, and whether final cleaning is charged separately. It's also worth looking at recent reviews about nighttime noise and the condition of the appliances, because since these are private managements, quality varies a lot. And watch out for stairs: many apartments don't have an elevator.
The average price is around 206 euros per night, but you can find options from 54 euros if you search in advance and outside August. The range is wide: small apartments in inland areas are the cheapest, while villas with moorings on the canals easily exceed that average.
May, June and September are the ideal months: the weather allows swimming and sightseeing, and prices drop notably compared with July and August. If your only option is summer, try to book on weekdays, because July weekends skyrocket.
The area near the beach of Empuriabrava, around the promenade, is the most practical: children can walk to the sand and there are services nearby. Apartments such as the Aptos. Comte D´Empuries or the AwayDays Miami 1 Estudio Vista Mar are well located for that. Avoid the inland urbanizations if you don't want to depend on the car for every outing.
The most common way is to arrive by car via the AP-7 or the N-II from Girona or Barcelona; Girona airport is 50 km away. Once there, the car is almost essential because the beach, the center and the canals are separated by several kilometers. There is some local bus line, but it is scarce and doesn't cover the urbanizations well.
Since these are mostly private apartments, check whether the price includes sheets, towels and final cleaning, because they are usually charged separately. Also look at the cancellation policy, which in many cases is strict in high season, and whether the accommodation has an elevator or included parking. Read recent reviews about the condition of the furniture and the noise, because quality varies a lot between owners.
