Cuenca has two clearly differentiated areas for accommodation, and the choice depends on what you are looking for. The upper part, declared a World Heritage Site, is where the hanging houses, the cathedral and the Huécar viewpoint are concentrated. Here you will find mainly guesthouses and charming apartments, many in historic buildings. Of course, the streets are steep and cobbled, so if you are traveling with a large suitcase or have mobility problems, you will notice it. The lower part, around the avenida de los Alfares and the train station, is flatter and more practical. There are more modern hotels, with nearby parking and direct car access. From there you can go up to the old town by city bus or on foot in about twenty minutes, although the hill is serious.
If you come by car, consider staying in the lower part or on the outskirts, because parking in the historic center is complicated and expensive. There is a public parking lot next to the Parador, but it fills up quickly on long weekends and weekends. If you arrive by train or bus, the station is in the lower part, so a nearby hotel will be more convenient for you. To get around, the city bus connects both areas well, and taxis are cheap if you don't want to walk. As for prices, the months of July and August are the most expensive, along with the December long weekends and Easter. January and February, except for the San Mateo long weekend in September, usually have much lower rates. Booking two or three weeks in advance usually gives better prices than doing it months ahead, because many accommodations apply dynamic rates.
Before booking, check carefully whether the accommodation has an elevator, because many old buildings do not have one. Also check whether the price includes breakfast, since in apartments it is usually not included and in hotels it is sometimes an extra. If you travel in high season, confirm whether cancellation is free, because plans can change. And if you are interested in peace and quiet, avoid accommodations facing the plaza Mayor, where there are terraces and noise until late. At HotelsCasa you currently have 262 accommodations in Cuenca, with an average price of 141 euros per night and the cheapest from 42 euros. Most are apartments (184), followed by hotels (26), vacation homes (22), guesthouses (22), bed and breakfasts (4) and villas (2). The average category is 3.4 stars, so you will find simple but decent options. Some real examples you can see are the Ch Hostal Victoria, the HOTEL VALMAR, the Hostal Cortés or the Casa Botes.
From November to February, except for the December long weekend and Christmas, is when prices drop the most. Weekdays, from Monday to Thursday, also tend to be quite a bit cheaper than weekends.
The lower part or the surroundings of the avenida de los Alfares, because it is easier to park and you don't have to deal with narrow streets. From there you can go up to the old town by bus or taxi without any problem.
If you stay in the lower part, you can walk there in ten minutes. If your accommodation is in the upper part, the best thing is to take a taxi or the city bus, because the climb with luggage is very hard.
Check whether cancellation is free and until what date, especially if you travel in high season. Also check whether they charge a cleaning supplement or whether breakfast is included, because in apartments it is usually separate.
It depends on how many days you stay. If it is more than two nights, an apartment gives you more space and a kitchen, but if you are only going for one night, a hotel saves you errands and usually has a 24-hour reception. In Cuenca there are many more apartments than hotels, so the offer is wide.
