Mojácar has two well-differentiated areas when it comes to looking for apartments, and it's worth being clear about this before booking. On the one hand there's the town, perched on the hill, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and views that money can't buy. Here you'll find accommodations like Casa Ridao, with panoramic terraces, or the SS Habitaciones turísticas VISTAS AL MAR, which although advertised as rooms, work as small apartments with a kitchen. The advantage of staying in the town is that everything is within walking distance: bars, shops, restaurants and the nightlife. The downside is that there are steep slopes and parking can be a nightmare, so if you're driving, look for accommodation with a garage space included or be prepared to leave your vehicle in a public car park.
On the other hand there's Mojácar Playa, the coastal area that stretches along several kilometres of coastline. Here the apartments tend to be larger, many with a communal pool and just a few metres from the sand, such as Mojacar Playa para Familias or MOJACAR HOME AND BEACH. This area is flatter, ideal if you're travelling with children or with people with reduced mobility, and it has the advantage that you can go to the beach without taking the car. The trade-off is that in summer it's very busy and the atmosphere is more touristy than that of the town. Between both areas there's a regional road that connects them in about ten minutes by car, and there's also an urban bus service in high season, although it isn't very frequent.
As for prices, the 72 euros per night that you find as the minimum rate usually appears in low season, from November to March, or in last-minute bookings in spring. The average price is around 142 euros, which is what you'll pay in June or September, when the weather is still good but the crowds have decreased. If you want to save, avoid July and August, when prices skyrocket and occupancy is at its maximum. To get there, the most practical option is to fly to Almería (about 80 km away) or to Murcia (about 100 km away) and hire a car, because public transport within Mojácar is limited. Before booking, check whether the apartment includes bed linen and towels, whether there's air conditioning (essential in summer) and whether the kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher or washing machine, because they don't always specify this clearly. Also look at the cancellation policies and whether they charge a cleaning supplement, something common in this type of accommodation.
Low season, from November to March, is when prices drop to 72 euros per night. You can also find deals in May and October, when the weather is pleasant but demand is lower than in the middle of summer.
It depends on what you're looking for. The town is ideal for enjoying the views, the food and the nightlife, but it has slopes and tricky parking. The beach is more comfortable for families and for walking to the sand, although in August it's very busy.
The nearest airports are Almería and Murcia, and from both it's best to hire a car. Within Mojácar there are urban buses in summer, but they're infrequent, so a car is almost essential to move between the town and the beach freely.
Pay attention to the cancellation policy, because some apartments don't refund if you cancel less than a week in advance. Also check whether there's a cleaning supplement, a damage deposit and whether the price includes electricity and water consumption, which are sometimes charged separately.
Most apartments in the beach area have a communal pool, but it isn't universal, so verify it in the listing. Air conditioning is common, although some only have a fan or heat pump climate control, so make sure it's specified before booking.
