Pals has 167 rental accommodations, and most of them are concentrated in two very different areas. On one hand, there is the old town, a medieval core at the top of a hill, with cobbled streets and views of the Empordà. Here you will find small apartments and guest houses, ideal if you are looking for atmosphere, restaurants, and being able to walk everywhere. On the other hand, the Platja de Pals area, about five kilometers from the town, is where the residential developments with terraced houses, villas, and apartment complexes such as Village Golf Beach or Casas adosadas en Platja de Pals by Apartaments Golf are concentrated. This area is designed for the beach and golf, with direct access to the sand and the Pitch & Putt courses, but out of season it can be very quiet, almost empty. There is also a third option, less well known: the farmhouses and country houses scattered among rice fields and pine forests, such as La Pineda or the Apartamento en casa de campo cerca de la playa, which offer more privacy and space, although you will definitely need a car.
The main difference between these areas is the pace. In the old town, everything is on foot, but parking is difficult and the accommodations tend to be older. In Platja de Pals, the residential developments are spacious, with straight streets and gardens, and most accommodations have a communal or private pool. Country houses, on the other hand, are isolated and usually require several minutes of driving to shop or eat. If you come in July or August, prices rise considerably: the average annual price is 181 euros per night, but in the middle of high season you can easily pay double. By contrast, in May, June, or September, you find the lowest price of 86 euros per night, especially in apartments and terraced houses. Spring and autumn are the best times to come if you want to combine beach and cultural visits without crowds.
To get there, the most practical option is to fly to Girona-Costa Brava (40 minutes away) or to Barcelona (1 hour and a half away) and rent a car. Public transport to Pals is limited: there are buses from Palafrugell or Torroella, but with limited frequencies, so do not count on getting around by bus if you stay in a residential development. Within Pals, everything is less than 10 minutes away by car, and there are bike lanes connecting the town with the beach. Before booking, check three things: whether the accommodation includes bed linen and towels (many houses do not), whether the pool is open on the date you are traveling (in April or October, many are closed), and whether the final price includes cleaning, which is sometimes charged separately and can add 50 or 60 euros. It is also worth checking whether the accommodation is in a residential development with slopes, because some terraced houses have three floors and not all have an elevator.
The average price is 181 euros per night, but the minimum is around 86 euros. The best deals appear in May, June, and September, outside school holidays, when demand drops and many owners reduce rates.
The old town of Pals is the only area where you can do without a car, because you have supermarkets, restaurants, and a pharmacy on foot. In Platja de Pals or in the country houses, you will need a vehicle for almost everything, unless you stay in a complex with its own restaurant.
From May to June and from September to October, because the weather is pleasant, there are fewer people, and prices drop compared with July and August. If you are looking for beach and swimming, September is usually better than June, since the water is warmer.
The most advisable option is to rent a car in Girona or Barcelona, because public transport to Pals is limited. There are buses from Girona that reach Palafrugell or Torroella, but then you will have to take a taxi or a second bus to get to your accommodation.
Most require an advance payment of 30% to 50% and the rest a few days before arrival. Free cancellation is usually limited to 30 or 60 days before check-in; after that period, you lose the deposit. It is also common for them to charge a damage deposit that is returned on departure.
