Bermeo is one of those places where it's worth staying at least a couple of nights, and apartments are the most common option if you're traveling as a family or with a group of friends. In the HotelsCasa listing you'll find 138 apartments, with an average price of 125 euros per night and the cheapest from 78 euros. The average rating is around 3.7 stars, so don't expect excessive luxury, but you will find a clean and functional base for exploring the town and its surroundings.
When it comes to choosing an area, you have three clear options. The old town, around the square and the church of Santa María, is ideal if you want to walk everywhere: bars, shops and the old port are five minutes away. The apartments here are usually renovated flats in old buildings, full of charm but sometimes without a lift. The port area and the seafront promenade, next to the fish market and the fishing port, is livelier and has sea views, although the price rises slightly and the noise of the seagulls or port activity may bother the most sensitive. Finally, the streets further from the center, towards the football pitch or the road out to Mundaka, offer larger apartments with parking, in exchange for a ten or fifteen minute walk to the center. If you come by car, this last option will save you the headache of parking in the old town.
As for prices, the difference between high and low season is noticeable. July and August are the most expensive months, and so are Easter and the long weekends in May and October. If you can, travel in June or September: the weather is still good, there are fewer people and apartments drop by up to 30%. To get there, the most comfortable way is by car on the A-8 and then the BI-631, but there are also buses from Bilbao every half hour (Bizkaibus line A3513) that leave you in the center. Once there, everything is done on foot; to go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe or the beaches of Mundaka and Bakio you'll need a car or bus, because the distances are not short.
Before booking, check three things: whether the apartment includes bed linen and towels (some charge extra), whether it has a lift if you're traveling with children or elderly people, and whether the final price includes cleaning or whether you have to pay it on arrival. It's also worth looking at recent reviews about noise and the state of the mattresses, because in old buildings that varies a lot. Real examples of what you might find are Andra Mari Apartamentu Turistikoak, near the church, or Apartamentos-Bermeo, right in the center; there are also smaller options such as Suite Bermeo - Loft or APARTAMENTOs URDAIBAI 1, aimed at couples or short stays. With a little patience, you'll find a decent place without paying too much.
The average price is around 125 euros per night, although you can find options from 78 euros if you look in low season or book in advance. In August, that same apartment can cost double.
June and September are the ideal months: the weather is pleasant and prices drop considerably compared to July and August. Weekends outside long weekends and public holidays are also usually cheaper.
The old town or the area around the port are the best options, because you have everything on foot: restaurants, supermarkets and the bus stop to Bilbao. If you stay on the outskirts, you'll need a vehicle to get around comfortably.
The easiest way is the Bizkaibus A3513, which leaves Bilbao every half hour and takes about 45 minutes. By car, you get there via the A-8 and then the BI-631, with a journey of about 35 minutes.
Check whether the price includes final cleaning and bed linen, because some apartments charge extra. Also check whether there is a lift, whether pets are allowed and the cancellation policy, which is usually stricter for apartments than for hotels.
