If you are looking at apartments in Cáceres, the first thing you should know is that the offer is wide: there are 164 apartments available, with an average price of 116 euros per night and the cheapest from 60 euros. The average category is around 3.5 stars, so you will find simple options and others that are more carefully kept. The city is not very big, but the difference between staying inside the old town or in the modern area is notable, both for the atmosphere and for noise and parking.
To choose well, think about what you are going to do. If your plan is to visit the Ciudad Monumental, which is a World Heritage Site, you should look for an apartment inside the walls or very close to them, for example around the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Santiago or the calle Paneras. There you will have everything on foot, but keep in mind that car access is restricted and that the streets are cobbled and sloping. If you prefer to sleep peacefully and do not mind walking ten or fifteen minutes, the area of the Paseo de Cánovas or the Avenida de España will give you more facilities for parking and supermarkets nearby. The new area, around the bus station or the shopping centre, is more functional and usually has somewhat lower prices, but you lose the charm of waking up next to a 16th-century palace.
As for the price, do not expect big discounts in high season, which here coincides with spring and autumn, especially if there are festivals such as WOMAD or the classical theatre days. The months of July and August are slower, and that is when apartments drop in price, as do weekdays compared with the weekend. To get there, the most comfortable way is by train or bus from Madrid; the train station is about twenty minutes on foot from the centre, and the bus station, ten. Once there, the city is easy to get around on foot, although if you stay in the modern part, a taxi or a city bus will take you to the old town for little money. Before booking, check whether the apartment has a lift, because many are in old buildings without one, and confirm whether the price includes final cleaning or bed linen, because it is not always included. It is also worth checking whether it has air conditioning, because in summer stone houses keep the cool, but in August it may be needed.
The average price is around 116 euros per night, although you can find options from 60 euros if you book in advance or in low season. The most central apartments are usually above that average, while those in the modern area are cheaper.
The months of July and August are the cheapest, because the heat reduces demand. Weekdays, from Monday to Thursday, also usually have lower rates than weekends.
If you come by car, look for an apartment outside the old town, for example near the Paseo de Cánovas or the Avenida de España. Inside the walls parking is difficult and many streets are pedestrian or restricted access.
The city is perfectly walkable, especially the old town, which is compact. If you stay in the modern area, there are city buses that leave you at the Plaza Mayor, and taxis are cheap for short distances.
Check whether the price includes final cleaning, towels and sheets, because sometimes they are charged separately. Also look at whether there is a lift, air conditioning and whether the kitchen has enough utensils, since in old buildings not everything is always there.
