Excursions with locals
Calafell has two clearly differentiated areas when it comes to looking for an apartment. On the one hand, there is the town centre and the port, where you will find the daily life of the town: markets, shops, tapas bars and the seafront promenade. Here the apartments tend to be more integrated into the residential fabric, which allows you to walk to the beach of Sant Salvador or the beach of Calafell, but it also means more noise in high season and more difficulty parking. On the other hand, there is the area of Segur de Calafell, further south and separated from the centre by the C-32 motorway. It is a quieter area, with low-rise housing developments and some apartment blocks with a communal pool. If you are looking for rest and don't mind taking the car to go for dinner or shopping, Segur will give you more calm. The third option, less well known, is the upper part of the town, towards the interior, where prices drop considerably and the views can be good, but you definitely need a vehicle to go down to the beach.
As for prices, the difference between seasons is notable. From mid-June to the end of August, apartments shoot up and the average price of 227 euros per night that you see in the listing mainly reflects those months. If you can, look at the weeks of May, early June or September: the sea is still at a good temperature, there are fewer people and prices can fall by half. The lowest price you will find right now is 54 euros per night, but that is usually in low season or in small apartments without views. To get there, the most practical option is the car via the C-32 or the N-340, but you also have the commuter train from Barcelona (R2 Sur line) that stops in Calafell and in Segur de Calafell. Once there, getting around on foot is viable if you stay near the promenade, but to go from one end of the municipality to the other (from Calafell to Segur is about 4 kilometres) you will need a car or local bus.
Before booking, it is worth looking at three things. First, the exact location of the building: an apartment on the front line is not the same as one on an interior street, even if the photo of the beach is the same. Second, whether the price includes bed linen, towels and final cleaning; in many privately managed apartments this is charged separately and can add 40 or 50 euros to the stay. Third, the cancellation policy and whether they ask for a cash deposit on arrival. In the HotelsCasa listing you have 154 apartments, but there are also 30 villas and 24 holiday homes if you prefer more space. Real examples such as LG Nice Apartment or Calafell Apartment 4 give you an idea of the variety: from basic studios to flats with a terrace and sea views. And don't rule out Apartamento Rosendo or LG Sea Views if you want something with its own name and more personalised management. The average rating of 3.4 stars tells you not to expect great luxuries, but that most are decently equipped for a week at the beach.
May and September are the months with the best value for money. The water is already or still acceptable for swimming, and prices drop considerably compared to July and August. If you are looking for the lowest price of the year, November or February, but then many restaurants and beach services are closed.
The centre of Calafell, near the promenade and the train station, is the most convenient. From there you can walk to the beach, the supermarkets and the bars. Segur de Calafell is quieter, but it depends on the bus or taxis to get around if you don't have a vehicle.
Not always. The price per night that you see in the listing is usually the base rent, but many apartments add a supplement for final cleaning or for electricity and water consumption if the stay is short. Before paying, check the total breakdown and ask if there is a deposit.
The R2 Sur line of Rodalies connects Barcelona Sants with Calafell in about 50 minutes, with stops also in Segur de Calafell. Trains run every 20 or 30 minutes at peak times. By car, the C-32 gets you there in about 45 minutes, but in summer at weekends there are traffic jams on the way back.
Most ask for an advance payment of 30% or 50% to confirm, and the rest on arrival. Free cancellations are usually limited to 7 or 14 days before check-in. Many owners require a cash deposit of between 100 and 200 euros that they return on departure if there is no damage.
