Excursions with locals
If you are looking at apartments in Fuengirola, the first thing you should know is that the offer is wide and varied: there are 1494 apartments available, with an average price of 217 euros per night and a minimum of 63 euros. Most are concentrated in three well-differentiated areas. The centre and the promenade are ideal if you want to have everything at hand: restaurants, shops, the beach of Poniente and the beach of Fuengirola, and the train station less than ten minutes' walk away. Here the apartments tend to be smaller but with better views, and the atmosphere does not fade even in low season. If you prefer tranquillity and more space, the surroundings of the Castillo Sohail and Carvajal, to the west, will give you access to rockier coves and less crowded walks, although you will need a car or bus to go to the centre. To the east, towards Los Boliches and Torreblanca, you will find a balanced mix: wide beaches, traditional chiringuitos and somewhat more contained prices, with the advantage of having the Los Boliches train stop very close.
The difference between some areas and others is not only one of atmosphere, but also of price and type of building. In the centre, tourist apartment blocks with reception services and a communal pool predominate, while in the outskirts more family-oriented complexes and urbanisations with gardens abound. If you travel in July or August, prices soar and it is difficult to find anything below 150 euros; on the other hand, in May, June, September or October you can get a three-star apartment (which is the average category of the city) for around 80-100 euros. The months from November to February are the cheapest, but bear in mind that some complexes close for renovations or maintenance, so it is advisable to check real availability before planning anything.
To get there, the most practical thing is to fly to Málaga and take the commuter train (line C-1) to Fuengirola: it takes about 40 minutes and leaves you in the centre or in Los Boliches. If you come by car, the A-7 motorway takes you directly, but parking in the centre is expensive and scarce; many apartments offer a garage space for a supplement of 10 to 15 euros per day. To get around within the city, the urban bus line runs along the entire promenade every 15 minutes, and the train is useful for going to Mijas or Málaga. Before booking, always check whether the price includes final cleaning, bed linen and towels, because in cheap apartments they are usually charged separately. Also check whether the building has a lift (many are three or four floors without a lift) and whether the pool is open on the date of your trip, because it does not always coincide with high season. Finally, look at the cancellation policy: non-refundable rates are common in the cheapest apartments, and if your plans may change, it is better to pay a little more for a flexible rate. Real examples such as Apartamento El Sol, Alemar I, APTO EDU 3MIN DE LA PLAYA or Las Rampas give you an idea of the variety: from central studios to duplexes with a terrace near the promenade.
The average price is 217 euros per night, but you can find options from 63 euros if you search in advance and outside high season. The months from November to February are the cheapest, followed by May and October, when demand drops and owners adjust rates.
If you are looking for good weather without crowds, June and September are ideal: beach and pool in use, but with prices 30% lower than in July and August. To save as much as possible, April and October also work well, although the sea water is cooler.
The centre and the promenade are perfect if you want to walk everywhere and do not mind night-time noise. For families with children, Los Boliches and Torreblanca offer wider beaches and quiet areas; and if you are looking for total calm, the area of the Castillo Sohail is the most secluded, although you will need transport.
The C-1 commuter train leaves you in Fuengirola in about 40 minutes from the airport, with stops in the centre and Los Boliches. Within the city, the urban bus runs along the coast every 15 minutes, and the train is useful for excursions to Mijas or Málaga.
Check whether the price includes final cleaning, towels and sheets, because in many cheap apartments they are charged separately. Also check whether there is a lift, whether the pool is open on your date and the cancellation policy: non-refundable rates are common at the lowest prices.
