If you are looking at an apartment in Jaca, the first thing you should know is that the offer is concentrated in two well-differentiated areas. The old town, around the cathedral and the Ciudadela, is ideal if you want to walk everywhere: bars, shops and the city's own atmosphere. Apartments here are usually flats in renovated old buildings, full of charm but sometimes without a lift and with narrow streets. The other area is the modern expansion, especially towards the avenida de Francia and the surroundings of the palacio de Congresos, where you will find developments with a pool and parking, quieter but ten or fifteen minutes' walk from the centre. If you come with children or in winter with skis, this second option tends to be more practical.
The main difference between one area and another is not only the distance to the centre, but the type of stay. In the old town you will experience the real city, with its market and its bustle, but you will have to look for street parking or pay for a garage. On the outskirts, the apartment is usually larger, with well-kept common areas and easy access for loading and unloading the car. There are also intermediate options, such as the surroundings of the avenida de Francia, which combine relative proximity with comfort. To decide, think about your plan: if it is an urban getaway, centre; if it is a week of skiing or with children, better the modern area.
As for the price, the 113 euros per night that you find as a minimum rate usually appear in low season, from November to March outside bank holidays and Easter. The average price is around 184 euros, and rises notably in December, Easter and July-August. To get it right, book in advance on those dates and check whether the apartment includes bed linen and towels, because some charge for them separately. Getting there is simple: Jaca is an hour and a half from Zaragoza via the A-23, and two hours from Pamplona. Once there, move around on foot if you stay in the centre; if not, you will need a car for everything, including going to the Astún or Candanchú slopes, which are about thirty minutes away. Before booking, also check whether the price includes final cleaning, whether there is a security deposit and the cancellation policy, because in small apartments these conditions vary a lot. Real examples of what you can find are Casa Oroela, Los Sauces II, Atico Jaca Centro or Apartamento Vive Jaca, each one in one of these areas and with different characteristics.
Low season, from November to March outside bank holidays and Easter, is when prices drop to 113 euros per night. There are also good deals in October and May, when the weather is mild and there is less demand. Avoid December, Easter and August if you are looking for adjusted rates.
The modern area, especially towards the avenida de Francia and the palacio de Congresos, is more recommendable because the apartments usually have a pool, green areas and parking. It is ten or fifteen minutes' walk from the centre, but you will gain in tranquillity and comfort. The old town is noisier and with less space for games.
By car, via the A-23 from Zaragoza (an hour and a half) or via the N-330 from Pamplona (two hours). There is a regular bus from Zaragoza and Huesca, but to move around the city and its surroundings you will need a car, especially if you stay outside the centre. Within the old town, everything is done on foot.
Check whether the price includes bed linen, towels and final cleaning, because some apartments charge for them separately. Also look at the cancellation policy and whether they require a security deposit, which is usually returned on departure. In winter, ask whether there is individual or central heating and whether the garage is included.
Yes, the aparthotel offers hotel services such as a 24-hour reception, daily cleaning and sometimes breakfast, but with apartment space. In Jaca there is only one, while pure apartments number 75 and usually have more independence and a full kitchen. If you value autonomy, choose an apartment; if you prefer to have it cleaned every day, the aparthotel.
