Mérida is not a huge city, so getting around between the main points of interest is simple, but choosing the area where you stay can change your experience quite a bit. The old town, around Plaza de España and the Templo de Diana, is the most convenient option if you want to walk everywhere: the Teatro Romano, the Anfiteatro and the main tapas bars are less than ten minutes away. Here apartments tend to occupy renovated buildings, which adds charm but sometimes means there is no lift or private parking. If you are travelling by car, you should look at the Nueva Ciudad area or avenida de Juan Carlos I, where you will find more modern accommodation, with private garage and supermarkets nearby, although to get to the centre you will have to walk about twenty minutes or use the city bus.
The main difference between one area and another lies in the balance between quiet, price and access to the monuments. The Santa Eulalia neighbourhood, to the north, is more residential and quiet, and from there you can reach the archaeological site with a pleasant walk along the river. On the other hand, the southern area, near the train station, is practical if you arrive by public transport, but it is less picturesque and emptier at night. The apartments you see in the listing, such as Apartamentos Harmonía or Apartamentos Gladiador, tend to be concentrated in the historic centre and the ensanche, and it is precisely in the centre where the price per night rises by an average of fifteen or twenty euros compared with the outskirts. If your priority is budget, look for options such as Castella Aquae estudio or Apartamento Tíbula Sur Parking, which offer good value for money about ten minutes' walk from the old town.
As for when to book, prices drop notably between November and February, except at Semana Santa and during the Festival de Teatro Clásico, which is held in July and August; on those dates demand soars and the most central apartments sell out weeks in advance. Spring and autumn are the most balanced seasons: good weather, fewer crowds and mid-range rates. To get there, the high-speed train station is about two kilometres from the centre, and from there you can take a taxi for about eight euros or the city bus. If you come by road, the A-5 takes you directly into the city, and most apartments provide clear directions for accessing their car parks. Before booking, check whether the accommodation includes bed linen and towels, whether it has air conditioning (essential in summer) and whether the kitchen is fully equipped, because many apartments advertise "estudio" and only have a microwave and electric hob. Also check the cancellation policy and whether the final price includes cleaning fees, which in some cases add twenty or thirty euros to the stay.
The average price is around 102 euros per night, although you can find options from 48 euros. The lowest rates are between November and February, outside long weekends and public holidays, as long as it does not coincide with Semana Santa or the Festival de Teatro Clásico.
The Nueva Ciudad area or the surroundings of avenida Juan Carlos I are the most practical, because most apartments have private parking and quick access to the motorway. Of course, to get to the centre you will have to walk about twenty minutes or use the bus.
The high-speed station is about two kilometres from the old town. You can take a taxi for about eight euros, or the city bus, which stops near Plaza de España. If your apartment is in the ensanche, it will take you about twenty-five minutes on foot.
Always look at the cancellation policy, because some apartments offer a cheaper non-refundable rate. Also check whether the final price includes cleaning, since many add a supplement of between 20 and 30 euros that does not appear at first glance.
If you want to walk to the Teatro Romano and the bars, the centre is ideal, but you will pay more and there may be night-time noise. In the outskirts you gain in quiet and parking, and with the city bus you reach the centre in ten minutes. It depends on whether you prioritise convenience or rest.
