If you are looking at apartments in Roses, the first thing you should know is that the offer is wide and varied: there are 908 apartments available, with an average price of 171 euros per night and a minimum of 69. The average category is around 2.8 stars, so don't expect widespread great luxury, but you will find decent options for a beach week or a long weekend getaway. Most are concentrated in three areas: the town center, the bay (from the Ciutadella to Santa Margarida) and the Almadraba or Punta Falconera area, to the north. The center gives you commercial life, markets and restaurants, but nighttime noise in summer can be annoying. The bay is the most balanced option: sandy beaches a few minutes' walk away, a seafront promenade and supermarkets nearby. The Almadraba is quieter and has views of the Gulf of Roses, but you need a car for almost everything, and the apartments tend to be older.
The differences between one area and another are especially noticeable in access to the beach and in the atmosphere. If you are traveling with children, the bay (especially the Santa Margarida area) is the most practical, because the beaches have a gentle slope and there are lifeguard services. If what you are looking for is diving or hiking in the Cap de Creus, the northern area brings you closer to small coves and the coastal paths, although you will have to go up slopes. As for price, apartments drop notably outside July and August: in May, June or September you can find the same flat for 30-40% less than in the middle of high season. Spring and autumn weekends are also good times, but avoid the weeks of the Feria de la Santa (late August) if you want to pay less.
To get there, the most comfortable option is by car: from Girona via the AP-7 and then the C-260, it takes about 40 minutes. If you come by plane, the Girona-Costa Brava airport is 50 km away, and from Barcelona (El Prat) about 160 km. By public transport, there are buses from Girona and Figueres, but the frequency is limited outside the season. Once there, getting around by car is almost essential if you stay in the Almadraba or in outlying residential developments; in the center and the bay you can walk to almost everything. Before booking, check three things: whether the apartment has a parking space included (in summer parking in Roses is torture), whether air conditioning is included in the price or carries a supplement, and whether final cleaning is charged separately. It is also worth looking at the photos of the actual views, because many listings use images of the beach that do not correspond to the flat's window. Examples such as the Apartamento Piscina Viena or the Agi Arago, Agi Joan Badosa or Agi Josep Sabater studios can give you an idea of the variety: from basic studios to apartments with a communal pool, but always with basic services.
Outside July and August, especially in May, June and September, prices drop quite a bit and the weather is still good for the beach. Spring and autumn weekends are also cheaper, even if the water is colder. Avoid the last week of August, when demand rises because of the local fair.
The center of Roses or the bay area, between the Ciutadella and Santa Margarida, are the only places where you can do without a car. There you have supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and beaches less than ten minutes' walk away. The Almadraba or Punta Falconera are prettier, but without a car you are isolated.
The most practical option is to rent a car at the airport, because the journey is about 50 km by motorway and regional road. There are also Sagalés buses that connect Girona with Roses, but you will have to transfer at the Girona bus station. The total bus journey can take you more than two hours with waits.
Most ask for an advance payment of 20-30% and the rest is paid on arrival, although more and more charge the full amount when booking. Free cancellation is usually limited to 7-14 days before check-in, and outside that period you lose the deposit. Many add a supplement for final cleaning (between 30 and 60 euros) that is not always included in the price you see.
It depends on the season: in July and August, the beach is full and a communal pool gives you a break, but in June or September you will hardly use it because the sea is fine. Keep in mind that pools in Roses are usually small and shared between several blocks, so check whether it has opening hours or a capacity limit. If you are traveling with small children, it may be worth it; if not, better to spend that money on a flat closer to the seafront promenade.
