Excursions with locals
Valencia has more than 1,700 registered tourist apartments, so the offer is wide and varied. Most are concentrated in the historic center, the l'Eixample district and the Ruzafa neighborhood, although you will also find options near the City of Arts and Sciences or next to Malvarrosa beach. If you are looking for a bar and terrace atmosphere, Ruzafa is your place: it is a neighborhood with a life of its own, somewhat more bohemian, and the apartments are usually in renovated buildings. The center, around Plaza del Ayuntamiento or Calle Colón, leaves everything within walking distance, but nighttime noise can be a drawback if the flat faces a main street. The City of Arts area is quieter and more modern, ideal if you are traveling as a family, although to go to the old town you will have to take the tram or walk for about twenty minutes. The beach, for its part, is the preferred option in summer, but in winter many apartments close or drop quite a bit in price.
The average price of an apartment in Valencia is around 215 euros per night, although you can find options from 82 euros if you book in advance or outside high season. The dates of Las Fallas (from March 14 to 19) drive up rates and occupancy, so if your trip is not for the festivities, it is better to avoid those weeks. They also rise in August, especially near the beach. To get there, Manises airport is about 20 minutes away by metro (lines 3 and 5) to the center, and Joaquín Sorolla station, where high-speed trains arrive, is well connected by city buses. Getting around the city is easy: the metro and tram cover almost everything, but the center and Ruzafa are best explored on foot. If you are going to use the car, keep in mind that parking in the old town is expensive and complicated; many apartments do not include a parking space, so ask before booking.
Before confirming, check three things: whether the apartment has an elevator (many old buildings do not), whether the heating or air conditioning works well (in Valencia the July heat is intense) and whether the final price includes cleaning and municipal taxes, which sometimes do not appear at first glance. It is also advisable to read recent reviews about noise and the condition of the beds, because the average rating of 3.7 stars does not guarantee the same level in all of them. And if you are traveling as a group, compare the price per person: a three-bedroom apartment can be cheaper than two hotel rooms. Examples such as Carrer de Dénia, Total Valencia Vintage, Budget Inn or Mercat Suites give you an idea of the variety, but do not settle for the first one you see: the offer is so wide that it is worth spending a while comparing.
From November to February, outside the Christmas holidays and Las Fallas, is when prices drop the most. April, May and October are also good months: the weather is pleasant and the rates are reasonable.
The historic center, between Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Cathedral, is the most practical because everything is less than fifteen minutes away on foot. That said, be prepared for nighttime noise and for narrow streets with little parking.
The metro (lines 3 and 5) leaves you in the center in about twenty minutes for less than five euros. If your apartment is in Ruzafa or near the beach, you can combine metro with tram or take a taxi, which costs between 20 and 25 euros.
Check whether cancellation is free until what date, because many apartments require payment in advance and do not refund anything if you cancel late. Also note whether the final price includes cleaning and the tourist tax, which is usually about two euros per person per night.
If your trip is in summer and you want to swim, Malvarrosa beach has a good supply of apartments and a beach bar atmosphere, but the center is half an hour away by tram. In winter, the beach is quieter and many businesses close, so the center or Ruzafa are more practical.
