Dushanbe: sights, info and flights
Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan and its political, economic and cultural center. This city is visited as a base for exploring the country, but also for its calm atmosphere, wide avenues and a cultural scene that mixes Soviet heritage with Persian tradition.
What to see
The main route starts on Rudaki Avenue, the central axis of the city, flanked by administrative buildings, fountains and green areas. At its ends are concentrated the most relevant points of interest: the National Museum, which houses archaeological pieces and artifacts from the Silk Road, and Navruz Palace, a neoclassical style complex with banquet halls and interior gardens.
The Botanical Garden, south of the center, is a suitable place to walk among local and Asian species, with views of the Dushanbinka river. The statue of Ismail Samani, in the square of the same name, is another visual landmark, although it does not require more than ten minutes.
Neighborhoods and how to get around
The city is compact and can be walked without problem between Rudaki Avenue and the central park. The train station neighborhood, to the west, has a more popular atmosphere and small markets. To the north, near the Nation Palace, the area is more residential and hotel-focused.
To move around, buses and marshrutkas (shared vans) cover the main routes, but the center is best explored on foot. Informal taxis are common; the price is negotiated before getting in.
Museums and theaters
The National Museum of Tajikistan is a must-see visit: three floors ranging from prehistory to independence, with a room dedicated to the Buddha statue in Nirvana, found in the south of the country. The Ayni Opera and Ballet Theater, on the avenue of the same name, offers sporadic performances of music and dance, although the schedule is irregular and it is advisable to check at the box office.
The Ethnographic Museum, smaller, displays costumes, carpets and utensils from the different Tajik regions. It is useful to understand the diversity of the country before leaving the capital.
Eating and nightlife
The gastronomic offer is concentrated in restaurants serving Tajik and Uzbek cuisine: plov (rice with meat and carrot) is the national dish and is served in almost all establishments. There are also shashlik (skewers) places and tea houses (chaikhanas) where green tea is drunk with sweets.
Nightlife is limited: there are some bars and nightclubs in large hotels, but most people have dinner early and activity drops after ten o'clock. If you are looking for atmosphere, the area around the Tajikistan Hotel and Shotemur Street concentrate the few venues open late.

In general, the center is safe and there is visible police presence. It is advisable to avoid the more remote and unlit areas, but it is not a city with serious problems of violent crime.

Two full days are enough to visit the museum, the palace, the botanical garden and walk along Rudaki Avenue. If you want to take a trip to the nearby mountains, add one more day.
