The excursion

Nobody could have guessed that Etterbeek, a little village outside the second city wall, would one day become the centre of European power, with the most important institutions only a few kilometres from Parc Leopold. Why did Brussels take on the role of European capital? This walk is a trip through time: from bucolic pre-19th-century Etterbeek, where the Brussels elite lived in vast mansions, through the 19th century, to the 1950s, when the European institutions settled in the neighbourhood.
