The excursion

Unwelcome in Germany and France because of his ideas, Karl Marx went into exile in Brussels in 1845, then a land of asylum for revolutionaries. Belgium gave him a residence permit on condition that he did not publish on current politics; with Engels he nevertheless wrote the Communist Manifesto here. This walk leads through the centre of Brussels along the streets and squares where Marx lived and worked, and is also an immersion in the young, newly independent Belgium, then the second industrial power in the world. The guide is a Marx specialist who is not in Brussels full time.
Between 1845 and 1848 Karl Marx lived in Brussels, where he wrote the Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels.
