Excursions with locals
Ardales is not a big town, but its accommodation offer is more varied than it seems. In total there are 54 options, and most are apartments (25) and holiday homes (22), with only one traditional hotel and a couple of alternatives such as villas or bed and breakfast accommodations. That means that, unless you are specifically looking for a hotel with full services, the normal thing is that you end up in an apartment or a house. The average category is around 3.6 stars, so don't expect great luxuries, but you will find correct and well-kept establishments. The average price is 107 euros per night, and you can find something from 67 euros if you book in advance or outside high season.
When choosing an area, you have two clear options. The urban core of Ardales is the most practical if you want to walk to bars, supermarkets and the castle, and there you will find apartments such as the Ardales Loft or the Apartamento Vadim, which are usually small but central. If you prefer peace and views, the outskirts and the residential areas near the reservoir or the mountains offer larger holiday homes, with a terrace or garden, such as the Apartamento Steven or the Hostal Restaurante El Cruce, which also has a restaurant. The main difference is access: in the town you don't need a car for anything, but outside you will definitely need a vehicle to get around, especially to go to the Caminito del Rey, which is about 15 minutes away by car.
As for prices, high season (July and August) is the most expensive, and so are long weekends. If you can, travel in May, June or September: the weather is good and prices drop quite a bit. To get there, the easiest way is to go by car on the A-357 from Málaga (about 50 minutes) or on the A-384 if you come from Sevilla. By train, the El Chorro-Caminito del Rey station is about 10 kilometers away, but then you need a taxi or car. Within the town, everything is done on foot, and for hiking routes or the reservoir, a car is better. Before booking, check if the accommodation has a full kitchen (many apartments do, but not all), if the price includes bed linen and towels, and if there is a free cancellation option, because the weather in the mountains can change plans.
The average price is 107 euros per night, although you can find accommodations from 67 euros if you book early or in low season. Small apartments are usually the cheapest, while holiday homes with more space raise the average.
May, June and September are the ideal months: the weather is good for doing routes and the Caminito del Rey, and prices are lower than in July and August. In winter it can be cold at night, but accommodations usually have heating and prices drop even more.
If you want to walk everywhere, choose the urban core, where most of the apartments are. If you are looking for peace and space, the outskirts or the residential areas near the reservoir are better, but you will need a car for everything.

Check if cancellation is free and until what date, because plans can change. Also check if the price includes towels and bed linen, and if the apartment has an equipped kitchen, since not all offer it equally.
