Excursions with locals
Biar is a small town in the interior of Alicante, so the accommodation offer is not huge, but it is varied. In total there are about twenty active options, with a clear majority of holiday homes: ten exactly. Then you have five hotels, two apartments and one guest house. The average price is around 167 euros per night, and the cheapest you will find right now starts at 108 euros. The average category of the establishments is 3.4 stars, which gives you an idea that there are no great luxuries, but no dive places either: the rural and family-oriented prevail.
As for areas, the most practical thing is to stay in the old town or very close to the plaza del Ayuntamiento. From there you can walk to the ermita de San Blas, the castle or the tapas bars without needing to take the car. Holiday homes are usually on the outskirts, in quiet residential developments or in the middle of olive and almond groves; they are ideal if you are looking for silence and have your own vehicle. Hotels, on the other hand, are concentrated in the center or on the road into the town, which makes it easy to park and get out quickly toward Villena or Alcoy. The main difference between them is independence: in a holiday home you manage your own schedule and cook, while in a hotel you don't have to worry about breakfast and cleaning. If you come as a group or with children, the house usually pays off; if it is a couple's getaway, a charming hotel like La Façana or the Villa de Biar gives you more comfort.
Prices drop from November to March, except at Christmas and during the Moros y Cristianos festivities in May, which is when they rise the most. It is also worth looking at the weekends in October and April, which usually have more reasonable rates than summer. To get there, the usual way is to drive on the A-31 to Villena and then take the CV-799; from Alicante it takes about forty minutes. By bus there are lines from Alicante and Valencia with a stop in Biar, but the frequency is low, so check schedules before planning. Once there, getting around on foot is the most sensible thing for the center; for the rural houses you will need a car no matter what. Before booking, check if the accommodation has heating (in winter it is really cold), if access is via a dirt road and if it includes bed linen and towels, because in many holiday homes they do not provide them. Also look at the cancellation policy and whether they charge a supplement for cleaning or for pets, which is common in this type of accommodation.

The old town and the surroundings of the plaza del Ayuntamiento are the most recommendable, because everything is within walking distance: the castle, the ermita and the restaurants. The holiday homes on the outskirts are usually isolated and without public transport, so I don't recommend them if you depend on the bus.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild temperatures for walking and lower prices than in summer. Avoid the week of Moros y Cristianos in May if you are looking for tranquility, because it fills up with visitors and accommodations go up.
