Excursions with locals
If you are looking at accommodation in Cambrils, the first thing you should be clear about is that the town is divided into two well-differentiated areas: the port and the promenade, and the old town inland. The western area, next to the marina and the Regueral beach, is the liveliest in summer, with restaurants, shops and an atmosphere that doesn't sleep. On the other side, towards the east, the beaches of the Llosa and the Cavet are quieter and more family-friendly, with low-rise housing developments and less bustle. If what you are looking for is proximity to nightlife and beach bars, choose the port; if you prefer to rest and have the beach almost to yourself, head towards the end of the promenade or towards the streets parallel to the Montbrió road.
The price varies quite a bit depending on the season. In July and August, a two-bedroom apartment facing the sea can exceed 150 euros per night, and the general average rises to the 255 euros that you find across the whole offer. On the other hand, in May, June or September, you find the same type of accommodation for 60 or 70 euros, and the lowest price in the entire catalogue drops to 54 euros per night. If you can, avoid the central weeks of August and the Semana Santa long weekends, which is when demand spikes the most. To get there, the most comfortable way is by car on the AP-7 or the N-340, but you also have commuter trains from Barcelona to the Cambrils station, which is about a twenty-minute walk from the centre. Once there, almost everything can be done on foot or by bike, although to go to the southern coves or to Salou a car will come in handy.
Before booking, pay attention to three things: the real distance to the beach (don't just trust the map, look at the exact street), whether the price includes bed linen and towels or whether you have to pay a supplement, and whether the accommodation has a lift, because many apartment buildings are three or four storeys with no lift. It is also advisable to check the cancellation policies, especially if you travel in high season, and whether the accommodation is directly managed or through a real estate agency, because that changes the way you check in. In Cambrils there are 528 available accommodations, of which 369 are apartments, 48 holiday homes, 40 hotels, 32 villas, 5 aparthotels and 2 private holiday homes. The average category is 3.4 stars, so don't expect great luxury in most options, but there is a very wide offer for all budgets. Real examples such as the Apartamentos Turísticos Augustus, the Hotel Diego's or the Hotelet elRetiro give you an idea of the variety: from apartment blocks with a pool to small charming hotels in the centre.
The average price is around 255 euros per night, although that includes everything from basic apartments to luxury villas. The cheapest you can find is 54 euros, but that is usually in low season and with minimum stay conditions.
May, June and September are the ideal months: the weather is still good for the beach and prices drop quite a bit compared to July and August. Avoid Semana Santa and long weekends, which also drive up rates.
The eastern area, between the Llosa beach and the Cavet, is quieter and has direct access to fine sand without crossing streets with heavy traffic. There are also several playgrounds and the promenade is flat, perfect for going with a pushchair.
The centre and the promenade are easy to walk, and there are bike lanes that connect the port with the eastern beaches. To go to Salou or Tarragona, you have urban and interurban buses, and the train station is about a twenty-minute walk from the centre.
Always check whether the price includes final cleaning, sheets and towels, because some apartments charge for them separately. Also check the cancellation policy and whether they require a damage deposit that is returned to you on departure.
