If you are thinking about staying in Ciudad Rodrigo, the first thing you should know is that it is a small, walkable city, so the exact location of the accommodation matters less than in other cities. Even so, it is worth distinguishing between the historic centre, the modern area around the bullring and the Salamanca road. The old town, with the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and the castle, is where you will find the greatest charm and also most of the hotels with character, such as the Palacio Antigua Audiencia or the Hotel Conde Rodrigo II. Here the streets are cobbled and some are pedestrian, so if you are travelling by car, you will have to leave it in a nearby car park. The modern area, on the other hand, offers easier parking and usually has somewhat lower prices, although you will lose the historic atmosphere. The Salamanca road, for its part, groups together some stopover hotels, ideal if you only need one night in transit to Portugal.
The main difference between these areas is the atmosphere and the noise. In the old town, the nights are quiet, but in summer there are terraces and some bars with music until late. In the modern area, near the avenida de España, you will find supermarkets, pharmacies and more daytime activity, but also more traffic. If what you are looking for is absolute silence, rural accommodations on the outskirts, such as some holiday homes, will give you peace, but you will need a car for everything. As for prices, high season coincides with summer and with Semana Santa, when the Carnaval del Toro (February) sends rates soaring. If you can, travel in May, June or September: the weather is good and prices drop considerably. The average price in the city is 123 euros per night, but there are options from 50 euros, especially in apartments, which are the most abundant type of accommodation (22 of the 42 available). Guest houses and holiday homes add 14 more options, and there are only 6 traditional hotels.
To get there, the most convenient way is by car: Ciudad Rodrigo is about 90 minutes from Salamanca via the A-62 and less than an hour from the Portuguese border. There is also a bus from Salamanca (about 4 departures a day) and train, although the station is about 2 kilometres from the centre, so you will have to take a taxi or walk 25 minutes. Once there, getting around on foot is the norm: the centre can be crossed entirely in 20 minutes. Before booking, check whether the accommodation has a lift, because many historic buildings do not, and confirm whether the price includes breakfast or whether there is a shared kitchen, something common in apartments. Also check whether they offer parking or an arrangement with a garage, because parking in the old town is complicated. Finally, pay attention to the cancellation policy: in low season they are usually flexible, but on key dates such as the Carnaval del Toro, almost all require prepayment and do not refund.
The average price per night is 123 euros, although you can find rooms from 50 euros, especially in apartments or guest houses in low season. Three- and four-star hotels, such as the Hotel La Bodega or the Conde Rodrigo II, are usually above average.
The best time is from May to June and in September, with good weather and moderate prices. Avoid February if you do not want to pay more, because the Carnaval del Toro sends rates soaring, and also Semana Santa and August, when there is more demand.
If you are coming by car, look for accommodation in the modern area or on the Salamanca road, where it is easy to park on the street or there are nearby car parks. In the old town you will have to use a paid car park and walk with your luggage along cobbled streets, which can be an inconvenience.
By car, via the A-62 from Salamanca it takes about 90 minutes, and from the Portuguese border (Fuentes de Oñoro) less than an hour. There are also daily buses from Salamanca, and train, although the station is 2 kilometres from the centre and you will have to take a taxi.
Most allow free cancellation up to 48 or 72 hours before arrival, but on key dates such as the Carnaval del Toro they require prepayment and do not refund. Always check whether the price includes breakfast and whether there is a cleaning supplement in apartments, which is common.
