When looking for accommodation in Combarro, the first thing you should be clear about is that the town is divided into two very different areas. The lower part, next to the ría de Pontevedra, is the one that appears in all the photos: the hórreos, the stone houses right by the water and the tapas bars. This is where most of the apartments and holiday homes are concentrated, and you will sleep just a step away from the promenade and the viewpoints. The upper part, towards the hill, is quieter and more residential; from there you can walk to the centre in ten or fifteen minutes, but the views over the ría and the sunset make the walk worthwhile. If you come by car, bear in mind that the old town has narrow streets and parking in high season is difficult; many accommodations in the lower area do not include a garage space, so consider staying on the outskirts and walking.
Prices vary quite a lot depending on the season. In July and August, and also at Easter, the average price rises and it is difficult to find anything for less than 120 euros per night. On the other hand, if you can travel in May, June or September, the average price drops to around 100-110 euros, and in the winter months (from November to February, outside long weekends) you can find options from 81 euros per night. The difference between an apartment and a holiday home is usually in the size and the services: apartments are more practical for couples or small groups, while houses are better if you are travelling with children or want a full kitchen and terrace. The hotels, of which there are only three here, are concentrated in the new area and usually have parking, something you will appreciate if you arrive by car.
To get there, the most comfortable way is to drive on the AP-9 motorway, Pontevedra exit, and then continue on the PO-308 to Combarro; from Santiago it takes about forty minutes. If you come by train or bus, the nearest station is Pontevedra, and from there there are bus lines that leave you in the town in about twenty minutes, although the frequency is limited on Sundays. Once there, everything is within walking distance, but if you want to move to other towns such as Sanxenxo or A Lanzada beach, you will need a car or taxi. Before booking, check whether the accommodation has heating (in winter the stone houses get very cold), whether the hot water is enough for all guests and whether the price includes bed linen and towels, because in some holiday homes these are charged separately. It is also worth looking at recent reviews about noise, especially in the lower area, where bars close late at weekends.
The average price is around 169 euros per night, but in low season you can find accommodation from 81 euros. The difference depends a lot on the season and the type of accommodation; apartments are usually cheaper than holiday homes.
From November to February, outside long weekends and public holidays, is when prices drop the most, reaching 81 euros per night. May and September are a good balance between pleasant weather and moderate rates, without the bustle of summer.
If you want to have everything at hand and don't mind the noise, the lower area, next to the ría, is the most practical. The upper area is quieter and has better views, but you will have to walk about ten minutes to reach the centre and the restaurants.
You can take a train or bus to Pontevedra and from there a regular bus that leaves you in Combarro in about twenty minutes. Bear in mind that on Sundays the frequency is lower, so check the timetables before planning your return.
Check whether the price includes bed linen, towels and final cleaning, because in holiday homes these are sometimes charged separately. Also check whether there is heating or air conditioning, and whether the accommodation has parking, especially if you are travelling by car in high season.
