Excursions with locals
Cómpeta is a white village in the Axarquía region of Málaga, at about 550 metres above sea level, with views of the sea and Sierra Almijara. When choosing accommodation, the first thing you should be clear about is that the town centre is small and steep, so the location makes quite a difference. If you want to walk to bars and restaurants, look for houses or apartments in the historic centre, especially around plaza Almijara or calle Real; that said, be prepared to walk up slopes. In the lower area, near the A-7206 road, you will find it easier to park and there are flatter access routes, but you will lose some of the village atmosphere. The outskirts, towards the south or west, offer country houses and villas with a pool and plot, ideal if you are looking for peace and quiet and do not mind using the car for everything.
The difference between the types of accommodation is noticeable. There are 75 holiday homes and 60 villas, which are the majority option and usually have more space, a terrace and a full kitchen; they are the ones that best suit families or groups. The 40 apartments are more integrated into buildings in the village and are practical for short stays. The 12 bed and breakfasts and the 7 guest houses are the alternative if you prefer to be looked after and not cook, although they usually have less availability. There are only 5 hotels, so if you want reception services or a buffet breakfast, book in advance. The average category of the whole is 3.7 stars, which gives you an idea that simple, well-equipped accommodation predominates, not luxury properties.
As for prices, the lowest is around 59 euros per night, but the average shoots up to 405 euros, which indicates that there is a wide range: large villas with a private pool in high season are what push that figure up. If you want the price to come down, avoid July and August, and also Easter, when the village fills up. May, June and September are the best months: good weather, fewer people and more reasonable rates. To get there, the most practical option is to fly to Málaga and hire a car; from the airport there are about 55 kilometres along the A-7 motorway to Torrox, and then the mountain road to Cómpeta, which is winding but well surfaced. In the village there is no train station or urban bus, so a car is almost essential to get around, unless you stay in the old town and do not leave it. Before booking, check whether the accommodation has heating (winter nights are cold), whether car access is direct or whether you have to go up stairs, and whether the pool is open on the dates you are travelling, because many only operate from June to September. It is also worth confirming whether the price includes final cleaning and whether they accept pets, because not all of them do.
The average price is around 405 euros per night, but it is a misleading average because there is a big difference between a simple country house and a luxury villa. You can find options from 59 euros, especially in low season and in small apartments.
The best time is from May to June and in September, when the weather is pleasant, there are fewer crowds and prices are lower than in summer. July and August are hot and expensive, and in winter the nights are cold although the days are usually sunny.
If you want to walk everywhere, the historic centre is best, but bear in mind the slopes and parking. If you prefer comfort and space, the outskirts with villas and country houses are quieter, although you will need a car to go down to the village.
The most common way is to fly to Málaga and hire a car; from the airport there are about 55 kilometres along the motorway and then a mountain road. Within the village there is no public transport, so a car is essential to visit the area or go on excursions.
Most houses and villas require an advance payment of 30% or 50% and free cancellation only up to 7 or 14 days before arrival. Many also charge a damage deposit that is returned on departure, and some add a cleaning fee that is not always included in the advertised price.
