Excursions with locals
Frigiliana has 386 accommodations in the HotelsCasa catalog, and the offer is much more varied than it seems at first glance. The lowest price is around 61 euros per night, but the average is 208, so the range is wide and it's worth knowing what you're paying for before deciding. Most are villas (150), holiday homes (112) and apartments (100), while traditional hotels barely add up to 7, and there are 5 bed and breakfasts and 6 private holiday homes. The average category is 3.5 stars, which gives a clue: here you come to rent with space and a kitchen, not a resort with services.
As for areas, the historic center is the most sought-after option, and with good reason: cobbled streets, a quiet atmosphere and everything on foot. But beware, parking is difficult and many old houses don't have an elevator or powerful heating. If you stay there, consider whether the charm is worth climbing hills. The lower area, near the N-340 road or the highway access, is more practical: there are supermarkets, it's easy to park and you're ten minutes' walk from the center. That said, you lose some of the atmosphere. The third option is the outskirts, where most of the villas with pools and views of the valley or the sea are concentrated. They're ideal if you go by car and are looking for peace and quiet, but you definitely need a vehicle for any errand.
Prices drop notably outside July and August, and also during Holy Week if it doesn't coincide with regional holidays. May, June and September are the months with the best balance between weather and rate: the average can fall to 120-140 euros per night in accommodations that in summer exceed 250. To get there, the most common way is to fly to Málaga and hire a car: it's about 50 minutes on the highway to Nerja and then 10 more minutes on a mountain road. There are also buses from Málaga and Nerja, but with less frequency and limited schedules in the afternoon. Within the town, everything is done on foot; if you stay in an outlying villa, you'll need the car to go shopping or eat out.
Before booking, check three things: whether the accommodation has heating or air conditioning (many old houses only have one of the two), whether parking is included or you have to pay for a public parking lot, and whether the kitchen is complete or just a corner with a microwave. It's also worth looking at the photos of the bathrooms, because in renovated houses they tend to be the weak point. Real examples like La Casita Azul, a charming apartment right in the historic center, or La Casita de las Mariposas, usually have a good reputation, but read the recent reviews, not the ones from three years ago. Hospedería El Caravansar is a different option if you prefer something more like a small hotel, and La Casita De Angela works well for couples. With 386 options, filtering by type and area is your best ally; don't settle for the first pretty photo.
From May to June and in September, outside the high season of July and August. In those months the average drops considerably compared to the annual average of 208 euros, and the weather is still good for the pool or hiking.
The historic center or the lower part of the town, because everything is within walking distance. The villas on the outskirts are beautiful but are designed for getting around by car, and public transport is not frequent.
The most comfortable option is to hire a car and drive about 50 minutes on the highway to Nerja and then up to Frigiliana. There are also buses from Málaga, but with fewer schedules and some connection in Nerja.
Villas and holiday homes predominate, which are the best option for families because they have several bedrooms, a kitchen and usually a garden or pool. Hotels are scarce and more expensive in relation to what they offer.
Most require prepayment or a deposit of 30-50%, and free cancellation is usually limited to 7 or 14 days before arrival. In high season, many villas require a minimum stay of 4 or 5 nights.
