Hondarribia is a destination that combines seafaring life with a walled historic quarter, and the choice of accommodation depends a lot on what you want to prioritise. If you are interested in the atmosphere, the pintxos bars and being close to the beach, the Parte Vieja is the most practical option. Here you will find flats such as the “Piso con encanto en la parte vieja”, which allows you to walk everywhere. The downside is the night-time noise in high season and parking, which tends to be difficult. If you prefer peace and sea views, the area around the marina or the promenade of Hondarribia beach offers more modern hotels and apartments, although at a higher price. Another alternative is to stay in the San Pedro district, on the other side of the estuary, which is more residential and quiet, but you will have to cross the pedestrian bridge to get to the centre, something that takes ten minutes on foot.
As for prices, the current offer on HotelsCasa is extensive: there are 83 accommodations available, with a minimum price of 156 euros per night and an average of 410 euros. The average category is 3.7 stars, which indicates that apartments (64) predominate over hotels (8), holiday homes (5), villas (3) and guest houses (2). If you want the price to go down, avoid July and August, and also the weekends of June and September, when it fills up with visitors from San Sebastián. The months from October to April, except Easter, are the cheapest. It is also worth checking whether the accommodation includes cleaning or bed linen, because in apartments this is usually an extra charge.
To get there, the easiest way is to fly to San Sebastián (EAS), which is 20 minutes away by car, or to Biarritz (BIQ), half an hour away. From Bilbao airport (BIO) you have a one-hour journey. If you come by train, the Irún station is 5 minutes away by taxi or bus, and from San Sebastián there is a bus line that stops in the centre of Hondarribia every 30 minutes. To get around the town, you do not need a car, but if you want to visit mount Jaizkibel or the inland villages, it is advisable to have one. Before booking, check whether the accommodation has a lift, because many old flats in the Parte Vieja do not have one, and whether access is via stairs. Also check whether the wifi is fibre or ADSL, because in historic buildings the signal can be weak. And if you travel in high season, ask about the cancellation policy, because some owners require a 30% non-refundable deposit.
From October to April, excluding Easter and long weekends, is when prices drop noticeably. In those months you can find apartments from 156 euros per night, while in summer the average rises above 400. Weekdays in June and September are also cheaper than weekends.
The beach and seafront area is the most suitable, because it has direct access to the sand and green areas without traffic. The apartments and hotels in that area tend to be larger and more modern than those in the Parte Vieja. That said, you will have to walk about ten minutes to reach the restaurants in the historic quarter.
San Sebastián airport is only 3 kilometres from the centre of Hondarribia, so you can take a taxi for about 15 euros or the urban bus that stops at the bus station. If you arrive in Biarritz, there is a direct bus to Irún and from there another to Hondarribia, but the total journey is about 45 minutes.
Most ask for a 20 to 30% deposit at the time of booking, and the rest is paid on arrival. Many offer free cancellation up to 7 days before, but in high season some owners reduce it to 48 hours or make it non-refundable. Always check whether the price includes final cleaning, because it is usually a separate charge of 30 to 50 euros.
It depends on your plan. If you are only going for a weekend and do not want to worry about breakfast, a hotel is more convenient for you, although there are only 8 in the whole municipality. If you stay more than three nights or travel as a family, an apartment gives you more space and a kitchen, and is usually cheaper per night. That said, in apartments you will have to make your own bed and manage the keys with the owner.
