Excursions with locals
Getafe is not a conventional tourist destination, but if you have to spend one or several nights there for work, for a layover, or to visit the south of Madrid, it has a wider range of accommodation than it seems. In total there are 23 establishments, with an average price of 99 euros per night and the cheapest from 70. The average category is around 2.9 stars, so don't expect large hotels with a spa, but rather functional and well-connected options. Most are hotels (13), followed by apartments (4), guesthouses (4), one aparthotel, and one family house. Among the names you will find are the Ibis Budget Madrid Getafe, the Hotel Los Olivos, the Hostal Carlos III, or the Dinastia, each with its own profile.
As for areas, the city is divided into two clear zones when it comes to sleeping. On one hand, there is the center, around calle Madrid and plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the hostales and guesthouses are concentrated, with moderate prices and a neighborhood atmosphere. On the other, the northern area, next to the A-42 highway and the Universidad Carlos III campus, where chain hotels such as the Ibis Budget are located; that is a good place to stay if you are driving or need to get out quickly toward Madrid. The main difference is noise and parking: in the center it is difficult to leave the car, but you have bars and supermarkets on foot; on the outskirts, everything is quieter but you depend on a vehicle or public transport.
Prices drop notably from Friday to Sunday, because during the week they are taken up by workers and students. If you can, book for the weekend and you will find rates closer to 70 euros. To get around, the commuter train (line C-4) leaves you at Atocha in about twenty minutes, and the intercity buses (lines 441, 442, 443) leave from Plaza Elíptica every few minutes. If you come by plane, Barajas airport is about 40 minutes away by car or by a combination of metro and train. Before booking, check whether the price includes breakfast, because many establishments do not serve it or charge separately, and check whether parking is free or paid, since in the center it can cost up to 15 euros per day. It is also worth checking whether the reception has limited hours, especially in small hostales, because there is not always 24-hour reception.
The average price per night is around 99 euros, and the lowest you will find is about 70 euros. That minimum price usually appears in hostales or guesthouses, and on weekends in chain hotels.
The best time is from Friday to Sunday throughout the year, because demand drops a lot since there is no work or university activity. In summer prices are also somewhat lower, although temperatures can be high.
If you are driving, look for accommodation in the northern area, near the A-42 or the university campus. There the hotels usually have their own parking or easy access, while in the center parking is scarce and paid.
You can use the C-4 commuter train, which takes about twenty minutes to Atocha, or the intercity buses that leave from Plaza Elíptica. Both run frequently throughout the day, although early in the morning the option is a taxi or a car.
Check whether the price includes breakfast and whether parking is free or paid. Also look at the reception hours, because in small hostales it may close at night and not allow late arrivals without notice.
