Excursions with locals
Granada offers almost two thousand accommodations to choose from, with an average price of 121 euros per night and options from 33 euros. The offer is distributed unevenly: apartments predominate, with more than 1,400, followed at a distance by hotels (162), holiday homes (147), guesthouses (58), villas (27) and aparthotels (18). This variety makes it advisable to decide beforehand what type of experience you are looking for, because sleeping next to the Alhambra is not the same as in the city's commercial center or in a town in the metropolitan belt.
If you want to be near the monuments, the Albaicín and the surroundings of the Alhambra are the areas with the most atmosphere, although the streets are steep and parking is scarce. The center, around the Catedral and Gran Vía street, is more practical for getting around on foot and finding restaurants open at any hour. El Realejo, next to the Alhambra but quieter, combines both well. For tight budgets, the area around the bus station or the Zaidín offer lower prices, but you will have to use public transport to reach the historic center. In high season (spring and October, when there are public holidays) prices rise; on the other hand, January and February, except for the week of the Fiesta del Patrón, are the cheapest months. Booking two or three weeks in advance usually gives better results than doing it at the last minute, especially if you want an apartment with a kitchen, which is the most cost-effective option for stays of several days.
To get there, the Federico García Lorca airport is 15 kilometers away; the city bus leaves you in the center for just over three euros. If you come by train, the Andaluces station is a twenty-minute walk from the Catedral. Within the city, the bus network works well, but many tourist areas are pedestrianized, so be prepared to walk. Before booking, check whether the accommodation has an elevator (very important in old buildings), whether the heating is individual or central, and whether the price includes cleaning or municipal taxes. It is also advisable to check recent reviews about noise, because in the Albaicín there are bars until late. Real examples of what you can find: Arc House Granada, a modern apartment near the center; Hostal Bocanegra, simple and well located; Hotel Sacromonte, with views of the valley; or Don Juan, in the heart of the Catedral neighborhood.
The average price is around 121 euros, but you can find rooms from 33 euros in hostels or guesthouses. Apartments are usually cheaper than hotels if you travel as a group or for several days.
May and September are ideal: pleasant weather and fewer crowds than in June or October. January and February are the cheapest, but it can rain and be cold at night.
The center, between the Catedral and Elvira street, is the most practical for getting around on foot and having everything nearby. If you prefer a bohemian atmosphere and don't mind the slopes, the Albaicín is very beautiful, but less comfortable for arriving with suitcases.
From the airport there is a direct bus to the center that takes about 40 minutes and costs about 3 euros. From the train station you can walk to the center in 20 minutes or take a taxi for about 8 euros.
Check whether the final price includes cleaning and tourist taxes, because sometimes they do not appear in the first search. Also look at the cancellation policy, the arrival time and whether the elevator works, since many old buildings do not have one.
