Excursions with locals
Gaucín: El Caimán via ferrata in Los Alcornocales Natural Park
Gaucín: Castillo del Águila via ferrata with zip line
Atajate: via ferrata with Tibetan bridge and 360 views
Júzcar: Sima del Diablo canyoning in the Genal Valley
Estepona: Sierra Bermeja canyoning with rappels
Benalauría: via ferrata with monkey bridges in the Genal ValleyManilva has 559 rental accommodations, and most of them are apartments: 490 exactly. That already tells you what to expect. If you're looking for a stay with a kitchen and space, this is your place. The average price is around 168 euros per night, although you can find options from 90. The average rating of the establishments is 3.8 stars, so don't expect widespread luxury, but it is a decent base for spending a few days on the coast.
To choose an area, think about what you want to do. The Duquesa area, around the marina, is the liveliest and has the most services: restaurants, shops, and a seaside promenade. There you'll find the Duquesa Harbour Club Aparthotel or the Duquesa Suites Golf and Gardens, which are a step away from the water. If you prefer quiet and views of the golf courses, the Terrazas Costa del Sol area, where the Pierre & Vacances Resort is located, is more residential and quiet, but you'll need a car for almost everything. The core of Manilva pueblo, further up, is another option: cheaper and with local atmosphere, but about ten minutes by car from the beach. The Manilva Green apartments are in an intermediate area, near the town and about a fifteen-minute walk from the coast.
As for prices, high season (July and August) sends rates soaring. If you can, travel in June or September: the weather is still good and prices drop quite a bit. To get there, the most practical option is to fly to Málaga or Gibraltar and rent a car. Manilva has no train station, and the bus from the coast is scarce and slow. With a car, you'll also be able to get to the beaches of Sabinillas or neighboring towns such as Casares or Estepona without depending on schedules. If you don't want a car, stay in Duquesa, where almost everything is within walking distance.
Before booking, check three things: whether the accommodation includes a parking space (in summer, parking on the coast is torture), whether air conditioning is included in the price or has a surcharge, and whether the kitchen is equipped for real cooking, because many apartments only have a microwave and coffee maker. Also look at recent reviews about noise: some complexes are above bars or nightclubs. And check the real distance to the beach on a map, because many listings say "200 meters" when that's as the crow flies, not walking.
The average price is around 168 euros per night, although you can find apartments from 90 euros if you book in advance or in low season. In August, prices rise notably, so it's worth comparing carefully.
June and September are the best months: you get beach weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices than in July and August. May also works well if you don't mind the water being a bit colder.
The Duquesa area, around the marina, is the most practical for getting around on foot. There you have supermarkets, restaurants, and the beach nearby. The rest of Manilva, especially the golf developments, is designed for driving.
The most comfortable option is to fly to Málaga or Gibraltar and rent a car, because Manilva has no train and the bus is infrequent. From Málaga it's about 45 minutes on the A-7 highway; from Gibraltar, barely 20 minutes.
Most apartments and villas require prepayment and allow free cancellation only up to 7 or 14 days before arrival. In high season, many require minimum stays of one week. Always read the fine print about cleaning fees and deposits.
