Excursions with locals
Marbella has more than three thousand four hundred accommodations on the market, so the offer is broad and varied, but it can also be overwhelming if you don't have a clear idea of what you're looking for. The first thing you should know is that the city is divided into several areas with very different personalities. The old town, around the Plaza de los Naranjos, is ideal if you want the atmosphere of bars, restaurants and shops at street level, although parking is difficult and prices tend to be higher per square metre. The area of the Paseo Marítimo and the beach of the Fontanilla is practical for families, with hotels and apartments just a few metres from the sand, but in high season the night-time noise can be a drawback if your accommodation faces the main avenue.
If you prefer tranquillity and luxury, Puerto Banús and the Milla de Oro concentrate high-end villas and apartments, with direct access to private beaches and security services. There the average price rises considerably, but you can also find cheaper options if you move a few streets away from the port. To the east, in the area of Cabopino, the atmosphere is more residential and relaxed, with a small marina and natural coves; it is a good choice if you travel by car and want to escape the bustle. At the western end, San Pedro de Alcántara, although administratively it is another locality, is used as a cheaper alternative for staying and then travelling to Marbella by bus or car in ten minutes.
As for prices, the minimum you will find is about seventy euros per night, but the average stands at four hundred and nine, which gives you an idea of the range. The average category of the establishments is 3.6 stars, so don't expect widespread luxury. To get better rates, avoid July and August, and also the week of the Feria de San Bernabé in June. May, September and October are excellent months: the weather is still good and prices drop by up to thirty percent. To get there, the airport of Málaga is about forty minutes away via the AP-7 motorway; from there you have direct buses to Marbella every hour, or you can rent a car, which I recommend if you are going to move between areas. Within the city, the urban buses work well for going to Puerto Banús or the old town, but for more distant beaches such as Cabopino you will need your own vehicle.
Before booking, check three things: the exact location on the map, because many listings say "Marbella" but are in urbanizaciones twenty minutes from the centre; the cancellation conditions, which vary a lot between apartments and hotels; and whether the price includes cleaning or tourist taxes, which are sometimes added at the end. It is also worth checking whether the accommodation has a lift, air conditioning and a parking space, because in summer and with a car they are almost essential. With this data, you will be able to choose between the 2,585 apartments, the 366 villas, the 223 holiday homes, the 96 hotels, the 38 private houses or the 30 guest houses that are available, according to what best suits your plan.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to find low prices in Marbella?
From November to March, except Christmas and Easter, is when prices drop the most, with nights from seventy euros. May and October are a good balance between pleasant weather and moderate rates, without the summer crowds.
Which area suits me if I go without a car?
The old town or the Paseo Marítimo are the best options, because you have everything on foot and the urban bus stops are nearby. Puerto Banús also has good connections, but the distances between the accommodation and the stop can be long if you move away from the port.
How do I get there from the airport of Málaga?
You have direct buses from the company Avanza that leave every hour and take about forty-five minutes, with a stop in the centre and in Puerto Banús. You can also take a train to Fuengirola and then a bus, but it is slower; the rental car is the most comfortable if you plan to move along the coast.
What booking conditions should I check in the apartments?
Most apartments require payment in advance and have free cancellation only up to a week before arrival. Check whether the final price includes cleaning and the tourist tax, because many listings do not show them in the first search.
Is there a difference between staying in Marbella centre and in San Pedro de Alcántara?
Yes, quite a lot. In San Pedro prices are lower and there is more free parking, but you will have to take the bus or the car to go to the beaches of Marbella or to Puerto Banús. The centre gives you the full experience of the city, but in exchange for more noise and less ease of parking.
