If you are looking at accommodation in Pollensa, the first thing you should be clear about is that the municipality includes several very different areas. The historic centre, about six kilometres from the coast, is where small hotels, guest houses and charming apartments are concentrated. Here the atmosphere is quiet, with cobbled streets, shops selling local produce and restaurants where you eat properly. On the other hand, Puerto de Pollensa, which is the beach area, has a larger offer of family hotels and apartments with a pool, just a few metres from the seafront promenade. If you are looking for absolute peace and space, the residential developments between the port and Cala San Vicente, such as Llenaire or Bellresguard, offer private villas with a garden and sea views, although you will need a car for everything.
The main difference between staying in the town or on the coast is the pace of the day. In the town, at night there is hardly any noise and access to the beach involves a daily trip. In the port, you have the bay right next to you, but in July and August parking is difficult and the price goes up. The villas, which are the majority option in the area (144 of the 200 available accommodations), are usually on plots with lawns and a barbecue, ideal for going as a group or with children. The apartments, 36 in total, are concentrated mainly in the port and in two- or three-storey buildings. The hotels, only 12, are mostly three- or four-star establishments, although there is also one of the interior type in the old town, such as Hotel Desbrull, which is a restored manor house.
As for prices, the high season (July and August) is the most expensive, with an average of 329 euros per night and minimums that rarely drop below 183 euros. If you can, travel in May, June or September: the weather is still good for the beach and prices fall by between 30 and 40 per cent. To get there, the most practical thing is to fly to Palma and hire a car at the airport; it is about 45 minutes along the MA-13 motorway. Public transport exists, with buses linking the port and the town, but it is infrequent and does not reach the scattered residential developments. Before booking, check whether the accommodation includes air conditioning (not always in old houses), whether the pool is private or communal, and whether the final price includes tourist taxes and cleaning. It is also worth checking the exact distance to the beach, because in the listings "10 minutes" can mean on foot or by car, and that changes the plan a lot.
The months of May, June and September are the most balanced. In May and June there are not yet crowds and the temperatures are pleasant, while in September the sea is still warm and prices fall compared with August. Avoid Easter week if you are looking for bargains, because demand sends rates soaring.
Puerto de Pollensa is the most practical option, because everything is within walking distance: the beach, the promenade, the supermarkets and the bus to Palma. The town is also viable if you do not mind taking a taxi or a bus to go to the beach, but the scattered villas in residential developments are unworkable without your own vehicle.
Most villas and apartments require an advance payment of 30 or 50 per cent and free cancellation only up to 30 days before check-in. Hotels usually offer flexible cancellation up to a week before, but with a cheaper non-refundable rate. Always check whether the deposit is returned on departure or whether it is deducted for damage.
It depends on the group. A villa is worthwhile if there are six or more of you, because the price per night is shared and you have a kitchen and private pool. For couples or solo travellers, a hotel or a central apartment is cheaper and free of cleaning or maintenance worries.
There is a bus line connecting Pollensa with Puerto de Pollensa every 30 or 60 minutes depending on the season, with a journey of about 15 minutes. A taxi costs between 10 and 15 euros. By bicycle it is a flat route of about six kilometres, but in summer the heat can make it tiring.
