Rascafría is a municipality in the Guadarrama mountains, north of Madrid, and its accommodation offer is spread between the town centre, the Lozoya valley and the slopes that climb towards the mountain passes. If you're looking for peace and nature, the holiday homes and rural apartments outside the town centre give you more space and views, but you'll have to take the car to go for dinner or do your shopping. In the town, on the other hand, hotels and some inns allow you to leave your vehicle parked and get around on foot, something you appreciate if you come in high season or on busy weekends. The main difference between one area and another is access to services: in the centre you have bars, shops and the monastery of El Paular nearby, while on the outskirts you gain silence and direct contact with hiking routes, but you lose convenience.
As for prices, the cheapest you'll find is during the week, Monday to Thursday, outside long weekends and school holidays. On autumn and winter weekends, when people head up to see the colour of the forests or to ski in Valdesquí or Navafría, prices rise quite a bit. Spring and summer are gentler in demand, except August, which also fills up. If your date is flexible, always compare the same accommodation on individual days: sometimes it works out cheaper to stay two nights during the week than one single night on Saturday. On HotelsCasa there are currently 28 accommodations, with an average price of 188 euros per night and the lowest at 70 euros, so the range is wide and it's worth filtering by type and location before deciding.
To get there, the most practical way is to drive along the M-604 from Madrid, which takes about 70-80 minutes depending on traffic. There are also buses on line 194 from the Plaza de Castilla interchange, which drop you in the town centre, but the frequency is limited and it's no good for getting between scattered accommodations. Once there, if you're staying outside the town centre, you need your own vehicle to get to the restaurants or the starting points of the routes. Before booking, check carefully whether the accommodation has heating or a fireplace (essential in winter), whether it allows pets, whether the price includes bed linen and towels, and whether there's a minimum number of nights. It's also worth looking at the photos of the rooms, not just those of the common areas, and reading recent comments about cleanliness and noise, because in renovated old houses sound insulation can be a problem.
The average price is around 188 euros per night, although you can find options from 70 euros if you search in advance and on weekdays. Weekends and long weekends rise quite a bit, so it's worth comparing dates.
Monday to Thursday, outside school holidays and long weekends, is when rates drop the most. Spring and autumn, without snow or extreme heat, are good times to enjoy the surroundings and pay less than in winter or August.
If you want to walk to bars and shops, choose the town centre. If you prefer silence and nature, the houses and apartments in the valley or on the slopes are better, but you'll need a car for everything.
There are buses on line 194 from Madrid (Plaza de Castilla) that reach the town, but the frequency is low and they don't cover accommodations far from the centre well. To get around freely, driving is the most recommended option.
Check the minimum number of nights, whether heating or a fireplace is included, whether they allow pets and whether bed linen and towels are included in the price. Also read recent comments about cleanliness and sound insulation.
