Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, a compact and livable city of about 295,000 inhabitants, crossed by the Ljubljanica river. You travel there for its pedestrian old town, its relaxed university atmosphere, and because it is the gateway to the Alps and Lake Bled.

The Krakovo neighborhood, south of the center, is a set of low houses with urban gardens and a quiet atmosphere, perfect for strolling.
The city is small and easy to walk. For longer distances, there are city buses, but they are not necessary for the essentials. The river is crossed by several bridges, besides the Triple Bridge, such as the Butchers' Bridge or the Cobbler's Bridge.

The gastronomic offer is concentrated in the center and along the riverbank, where there are terraces with views. Typical dishes include kranjska klobasa (Slovenian sausage), štruklji (stuffed pasta), and local beer Union or Lasko. For something quick, the Central Market has take-away food stalls.
Nightlife is university-oriented and without excesses. The Metelkova area, a former military barracks converted into an alternative cultural center, has bars, clubs, and concerts in an underground atmosphere. There are also Slovenian wine bars near the river, ideal for a quiet drink.

Ljubljana is the perfect base for day trips. Lake Bled, with its island and castle, is less than an hour away by car or bus. You can also visit Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cave, and the nearby Postojna Cave, famous for its underground train. Another option is the Logar Valley, to the north, for hiking and nature.
