Almagro is not a very big city, so most of the apartments you will find on HotelsCasa are ten or fifteen minutes' walk from the Plaza Mayor. The most convenient area to stay is the historic centre, between the square itself and the Corral de Comedias, because you have all the atmosphere, the tapas bars and the monuments right next to you. That said, as the streets are narrow and heavily used by pedestrians, if you come by car you will have to park on the outskirts or in one of the park-and-ride car parks, and then walk with your luggage. If you prefer peace and quiet and do not mind walking a little further, the area around the Parque del Carmen or the streets heading towards the train station give you easier parking and tend to be quieter at night.
The main difference between one area and another is noise and price. The apartments near the Plaza Mayor and Calle San Agustín are the most in demand, especially during the theatre festival season, and that is why they tend to be above average. On the other hand, in the streets further from the centre, such as those on the other side of the Ronda de Santa Ana, you find larger accommodation for less money, although you will have to walk fifteen or twenty minutes to have dinner or visit the museum. If you come by car, take that distance into account: sometimes what you save on the apartment you spend on parking if you decide to go into the centre every day.
As for prices, the minimum you will see on HotelsCasa for an apartment in Almagro is 70 euros per night, and the average is around 94 euros. The months of July and August, outside the festival, are the cheapest, as are the weekends in January and February. If you can, avoid the week of the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico (it is usually at the end of June and the beginning of July), because prices shoot up and availability is hard to find. To get there, the most practical option is the train: Almagro has a station on the Madrid-Ciudad Real line, and from there it is about ten minutes by taxi or on foot to the centre. If you come by road, the A-4 leaves you about five minutes away, and then the exit towards Almagro is well signposted. To get around, the best thing is to walk; the city is flat and the distances are short. You only need the car if you want to go to the surrounding villages, such as Bolaños or Valdepeñas.
Before booking, check carefully whether the apartment has a lift, because many are in old buildings without one and the stairs can be steep. Also check whether the price includes bed linen and towels, or whether they charge you a supplement for final cleaning. And if you are travelling in summer, check whether it has air conditioning: not all of them do, and July nights in La Mancha can be hot. Finally, read the cancellation conditions, because some owners require an advance payment that is not always refunded if you change your plans.
The average price is around 94 euros per night, although you can find options from 70 euros. The figure rises considerably during the Festival de Teatro Clásico, so if you are looking for something cheap, it is best to avoid those dates.
The months of July and August, outside the festival, are the cheapest, along with the weekends in January and February. The weather is hot in summer, but apartments tend to have good rates and there are fewer people than in spring.
The historic centre, around the Plaza Mayor and the Corral de Comedias, is the most practical if you do not have a vehicle. From there you can walk to all the places of interest, although you will have to climb stairs in many old buildings.
The most convenient option is the train: there are connections from Madrid to the Almagro station, and then it is about ten minutes on foot or by taxi to the centre. If you go by car, the A-4 leaves you about five minutes from the town, with a well-signposted exit.
Check whether the price includes sheets, towels and final cleaning, because some apartments charge for this separately. Also look at the cancellation policy and whether they ask for an advance deposit, since it is not always refundable if you cancel.
