Olot is one of those towns that benefit from being in a natural park without giving up urban life. If you're looking for an apartment, you have 24 options on the platform, with an average price of 171 euros per night and the cheapest from 96. Most are concentrated in the old town and its surroundings, which is where it makes sense to stay if you want to walk to restaurants, the market or the Museum of Volcanoes. The Parc Nou area, to the south, is quieter and greener, ideal if you're traveling with children or prefer to wake up with views of the trees. On the other hand, near the plaza Major or the paseo de Sant Roc you'll find more atmosphere, but also more noise on weekends. The main difference between some areas and others is the walking distance to the center and the type of building: apartments in the old town are usually in renovated old buildings, with high ceilings and balconies, while those on the outskirts are more modern and functional, often with an elevator and parking space.
As for prices, don't expect big discounts in high season. The months of July and August, along with Easter, are the most expensive; the average price easily rises by 20%. If you can, travel in May, June or September: the weather is good for hiking the Fageda d'en Jordà or climbing the Santa Margarida volcano, and apartments drop quite a bit. Also, long weekend holidays, such as the December or Constitution ones, fill up, so book at least a month in advance if you want good value for money. To get there, the most practical option is by car: Olot is about 90 minutes from Barcelona via the C-17 and C-66, and parking in the center is paid, but many apartments offer a space for a supplement. If you come by public transport, there are buses from Girona (Teisa line) that take an hour, and from Barcelona about 2 hours. Once there, the entire center can be walked in 15 minutes; to go to the volcanoes or nearby towns like Santa Pau, you'll need a car or bicycle.
Before booking, look carefully at three things. First, whether the apartment has heating or air conditioning: in Olot, the climate is humid and cool even in summer, and many July nights drop below 15 degrees. Second, the cancellation policy: some owners offer free cancellation up to 7 days before, others don't refund anything if you cancel less than 48 hours in advance. Third, the beds: don't trust the photos, read the description to know if they are double, single or sofa bed, because in old apartments the bedroom is sometimes small. It's also worth checking whether they include bed linen and towels, or if you have to pay a final cleaning supplement, which usually ranges from 30-40 euros. With that clear, choosing between the Apartament Volcà Garrinada, the Gredera, the one on Carrer Esparreguera or the Pis Firalet will be a matter of taste and how much you want to walk.
The average price is around 171 euros per night, and the cheapest you'll find is 96. To pay less, avoid July, August and Easter; in May, June or September prices drop notably, especially on weekdays.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: the weather is mild for walking through the volcanoes and there are fewer people than in summer. In winter, the landscape is beautiful with fog, but some restaurants close on weekdays and the nights are cold.
If you want to walk everywhere, choose the old town, between the plaza Major and the paseo de Sant Roc. If you prefer tranquility and nature, the Parc Nou area is better, although you'll have to walk about 10 minutes to reach the center.
By car, via the C-17 from Barcelona or the C-66 from Girona; there are Teisa buses from both cities. Once there, the center is walkable, but to visit the Fageda or the volcanoes you need your own vehicle or to rent a bicycle.
Check the cancellation policy, because it varies by owner: some allow free cancellation up to a week before, others don't refund anything. Also check whether the price includes final cleaning, bed linen and towels, or if there are supplements for pets or for using the parking space.
