Excursions with locals
Staying in Leganés has little to do with the tourist experience of central Madrid, and that can work in your favor if you're looking for more contained prices and a more neighborhood atmosphere. The city is divided into several clearly differentiated areas. The center, around the Plaza Mayor and calle Carmen, concentrates the largest offer of hotels and guesthouses, with easy walking access to bars, supermarkets, and public transport. It's the most convenient option if you're coming for work or to visit the Universidad Carlos III campus, because everything is close by and you don't need a car. To the south, next to the Zarzaquemada neighborhood, you'll find some cheaper apartments and hotels, but you'll have to travel by bus or metro to the center; the price difference can be 15 to 20 euros per night, so it's worth it if your budget is tight and you don't mind walking a bit.
The northern area, near the Hospital Severo Ochoa and the Prado Overa industrial estate, is the quietest and offers the best value for money outside of weekdays. There's less noise and easier parking, but also less dining and shopping options. If you're traveling by car, this area suits you because you're ten minutes from the M-40 and the A-42, and you can reach central Madrid in about twenty minutes without tolls. As for prices, the general rule is that they drop from Friday to Sunday, when business demand falls; a three-star hotel that costs 90 euros on weekdays can be 65 if you book a week in advance for the weekend. There are also notable differences in August, when many companies close and hotels offer rates up to 30% lower.
To get around, the metro is your best ally: line 12 (MetroSur) has stops at Leganés Central, Casa del Reloj, and Julián Besteiro, and connects you with line 5 at Casa de Campo in about twenty minutes. Interurban buses (lines 480, 482, and 486) leave every ten minutes toward Madrid and drop you off at Príncipe Pío or at Atocha station, depending on the line. If you're coming by plane, Barajas airport is about forty minutes away by car or by metro with a transfer, and there's no direct shuttle. Before booking, check whether the accommodation includes breakfast, because in Leganés many hotels charge extra for it (between 6 and 10 euros) and in apartments it's usually not included. Also check whether cancellation is free up to 24 or 48 hours in advance, because the conditions vary a lot among the 13 available accommodations, and if you're traveling on a weekend, confirm that the reception doesn't close in the afternoon, something common in guesthouses.
The average price is around 105 euros per night, but you can find double rooms from 65 euros in two-star hotels or in apartments away from the center. On weekends and in August prices drop notably, so if you have flexibility, you'll save between 20 and 30 euros.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal for the mild climate and because there are no crowds. If you're looking for the lowest price, August is the cheapest month, although many restaurants and shops close for holidays.
The northern area, near the Hospital Severo Ochoa and the Prado Overa industrial estate, is the most practical because there's free parking and direct access to the M-40 and the A-42. The center is more complicated for parking, and if your hotel doesn't have parking, you'll have to pay between 10 and 15 euros per day in a public garage.
The fastest option is the metro: line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, transfer to line 6 to Plaza Elíptica and then to line 12 to Leganés Central; it takes about 50 minutes. By car or taxi, the journey is about 40 minutes, but avoid rush hours because the M-40 gets congested.
Always check whether cancellation is free and until what date, because in three-star hotels it's usually up to 48 hours in advance, but in apartments it can be 7 days. Also check whether breakfast is included and whether the reception has limited hours, especially in guesthouses, which sometimes close at 20:00.
