Mérida is not a huge city, so most accommodations are within a reasonable distance of the main monuments. If you are coming for the first time, the most practical thing is to look for something between the old town and the Plaza de España area, because there you will have the Roman theater, the amphitheater, and the museums less than ten minutes away on foot. The Santa María neighborhood, to the north, is quieter and has less noise at night, but some streets are steep and it can be tiring if you are traveling with children or with large luggage. On the other side of the Guadiana river, in the El Prado area, prices drop somewhat and there is more free parking, but you will have to cross the bridge every time you want to go to the center, which is not a problem if you like walking, although in summer the walk becomes hard at midday.
The offer is varied: of the 115 accommodations you will find on HotelsCasa, most are apartments (78), followed by hotels (18), guesthouses (12), vacation homes (3), and aparthotels (2). The average category is around 3.3 stars, so do not expect great luxury, but rather functional and well-located establishments. The average price per night is 122 euros, but you can find options from 43 euros if you book in advance and avoid long weekends. For example, Hostal Pompeya Mérida is usually in the low range, while Hotel Rambla Emérita, right in the center, or Hotel Zeus offer more services and a higher price. Apartamentos Harmonía are a good middle option if you are traveling in a group or want to cook.
To get a lower price, avoid Easter and the classical theater festival in July, which is when demand soars. The months from November to February, except for long weekends, are the cheapest. Getting there is simple: the high-speed train station is about twenty minutes away on foot from the center, and the bus leaves you in the same area. If you come by car, look for accommodation with parking included, because parking in the historic center is complicated and expensive. Before booking, check whether the price includes cleaning or tourist taxes, and whether the apartment has an elevator, because many old buildings do not. It is also worth looking at recent reviews about noise, especially if you face a street with terraces.
The cheapest accommodation in Mérida is around 43 euros per night, but that is usually in low season and in guesthouse rooms or small apartments. If you book on weekdays in November or January, you are more likely to find that rate.
Spring and autumn have good weather, but prices rise in April and October because of long weekends. If you are looking for a balance between pleasant temperature and price, February and March are good, as long as it does not coincide with Carnival.
The El Prado area or the streets near avenida de Portugal have easier parking and usually include parking in the price. The center is largely pedestrianized, so if you stay there, you will have to leave the car in a paid public parking lot.
From the train station, most accommodations in the center are 15-20 minutes away on foot. If you have large suitcases, there are taxis at the door, and the trip to the old town costs about 8-10 euros. The city bus also connects the station with Plaza de España, but it is not worth it for such short distances.
Check whether the final price includes cleaning and stay taxes, because sometimes they do not appear in the first search. Also look at the cancellation policy, especially if you are traveling on variable dates, and whether the apartment requires a deposit that is returned on departure.
