If you are looking at where to sleep in Olot, the first thing you should know is that the city is compact and that most of the accommodations are concentrated in the center or its surroundings. The old town area, around the plaza Major and the paseo de Blay, is the most practical if you want to walk to the bars, shops and the volcano museum. Here you will find above all apartments and some guesthouses, with the advantage that you will not need the car at all. If you prefer tranquility and views, the Parc Nou area or the slopes of the Montsacopa volcano offer hotels and vacation homes with a garden, but you will have to walk ten or fifteen minutes to reach the center. There are also options on the road to Santa Pau or towards les Fonts de Sant Roc, which are good if you travel by car and want to get out quickly towards the Garrotxa, although then the traffic noise can be somewhat more present.
The main difference between some areas and others is the balance between convenience and surroundings. The center gives you everything at hand, but the accommodations are usually smaller and with less outdoor space. The outskirts, on the other hand, offer more square meters and parking, in exchange for depending on the vehicle to have dinner or shop. If you come to do hiking routes through the Fageda d’en Jordà or to visit the volcanoes, it is worth staying in the north or east area, because you shorten the trips. If your plan is more urban, with restaurants and local life, stay in the center. As for prices, the cheapest is usually during the week from November to March, except long weekends and Christmas dates, when apartments go up. Spring and summer weekends are the most expensive, especially if it coincides with fairs or events in the region.
To get there, the most common is to do it by car on the C-66 from Girona or on the N-260 from Ripoll; there is a bus from Girona and Barcelona, but the frequency is limited, so check schedules before planning. Once there, getting around on foot is viable for the center, but to go to the surrounding villages you need a car or bicycle. Before booking, check if the accommodation includes heating or air conditioning, because in Olot the climate is humid and cool even in summer. Also look if the price includes bed linen and towels, something that does not always happen in apartments, and if there is a minimum of nights, very common in vacation homes. Finally, check the cancellation policy, because many owners require a deposit and do not refund the money if you cancel with little notice.
The average price is around 188 euros, although you can find options from 96 euros per night. Apartments are usually cheaper than hotels, and vacation homes or villas are the most expensive.
Spring and autumn are ideal for temperature and landscape, but they are the seasons with the most demand. If you are looking for low prices, go during the week from November to February, as long as it does not coincide with long weekends.
The center of Olot, around the plaza Major and the paseo de Blay, is the most recommended. From there you can walk to the restaurants, the market and the bus stops for occasional excursions.
By car, from Girona it takes about 40 minutes on the C-66, and from Barcelona around an hour and a half on the AP-7 and then the C-25. There is a direct bus from both cities, but with few frequencies, so check the schedules in advance.
Most ask for a card to guarantee the reservation, and many apartments require a 30% deposit or full payment in advance. Free cancellation is usually limited to 48 or 72 hours before arrival, and in vacation homes it may not exist.
