Excursions with locals
Salou is not a single destination, and that shows in the accommodation offer. With 1058 options available, most are apartments (874), followed by hotels (61), villas (20), holiday homes (17), aparthotels (13) and a couple of guest houses. The most convenient area to stay depends on what you are looking for. If you come with children or want to have everything at hand, the town centre and the seafront promenade are the most practical: you are close to the playa de Levante, the carrer Barcelona and most restaurants and shops. There you will find mainly apartments such as Rentalmar Alboran Family Plus or Rentalmar Salou Playa Family Suites & Pool, designed for families and with services such as a pool or entertainment. On the other hand, if you prefer peace and quiet, the Cap Salou area is more residential and green, with small coves and less bustle, although you will need a car or taxi to go down to the centre. The Poniente area, on the other side of the port, is quieter than Levante but still has direct access to the beach and some hotels with good views.
The main difference between areas is the pace: the centre is noisy in July and August, but it is also where there is the most life; Cap Salou is silent and proportionally more expensive; and the area of the cala de la Font or the Racó de Salou is a middle ground, with more classic hotels and less crowding. If you travel outside high season, prices drop considerably: the average annual price is 191 euros per night, but you can find rooms from 58 euros if you book in May, June or September, avoiding the weeks of Semana Santa and the long weekends. In August, the average price easily rises 40% or 50% compared to June.
To get there, the most common option is to fly to Reus (15 minutes by car) or to Barcelona-El Prat (one hour away). From Reus there are shuttle buses in summer, but if you stay in Cap Salou or in a villa, it is best to rent a car. To get around within Salou, the whole centre can be walked in twenty minutes; the city bus connects the centre with Cap Salou and La Pineda, and there is a commuter train that stops in Salou and takes you to Tarragona or Cambrils. Before booking, check carefully whether the accommodation includes air conditioning (not always in budget apartments), whether the pool is for exclusive use or shared with other blocks, and whether the final price includes cleaning and bed linen. It is also advisable to review the cancellation policy, because many apartments require payment in advance and do not refund anything if you cancel less than a week in advance.
The average price per night is 191 euros, but the lowest you can find is around 58 euros. To pay that, book in May, June or September, outside long weekends and avoiding the second half of August.
The centre of Salou, especially around the paseo de Levante and the carrer Barcelona, is the most comfortable due to its proximity to the beach and services. Apartments such as Rentalmar Alboran Family Plus or hotels with a pool and entertainment are concentrated there, and you will not need a car for anything.
The centre can be easily walked, and there is a city bus that connects the centre with Cap Salou and La Pineda. You also have the commuter train to go to Tarragona or Cambrils, and taxis that cost about 10-15 euros to go to Cap Salou.
In an apartment, you usually have to make the bed yourself and bring your own bed linen or pay a supplement. In an aparthotel, there are daily or every-other-day cleaning services, a reception and sometimes breakfast, but you usually pay more per night. If you go for a week, the apartment works out cheaper; if you go for a few days, the aparthotel saves you work.
Always look at the cancellation policy, because many apartments charge 30% at booking and do not refund it if you cancel. Also check whether the final price includes departure cleaning, use of the pool and air conditioning, because some charge these separately as a mandatory supplement.
