Excursions with locals
Valencia has more than two thousand two hundred accommodations in the HotelsCasa catalog, so the offer is broad and varied. The first thing you should be clear about is that the city is divided into very different areas from each other. The historic center, around the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Lonja or the Catedral, is ideal if you want to walk to almost everything: restaurants, shops and monuments. Here you will find mainly apartments in renovated old buildings, with the charm of wooden beams, but also with the noise of nightlife. If you prefer tranquility, the barrio del Carmen, within the same center, has narrower streets and a more bohemian atmosphere, although the price per night is usually somewhat higher than in other areas.
The ensanche, known as Ruzafa or the barrio de Russafa, has become the fashionable place in recent years. It is fifteen minutes walking from the center and offers a mix of traditional commerce, tapas bars and terraces. The accommodations here are mostly apartments, and the value for money is good if you don't mind the bustle. If you travel as a family or are looking for rest, the area of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the Malvarrosa seafront promenade are better options. At the beach, hotels and aparthotels have more space and usually include a pool, but you depend on the tram or bus to go to the center, which takes about twenty-five minutes.
As for prices, high season (June, July and August, and also the Fallas in March) drives rates up. The average price in the city is 196 euros per night, but you can find rooms from 71 euros if you book in advance in months like November or February, outside long weekends and holidays. To get around, the metro and tram cover the entire metropolitan area well, and the bus is frequent. If you come by car, keep in mind that parking in the center is complicated and expensive; many accommodations do not have their own parking, so ask before booking. It is also advisable to check whether the price includes cleaning, tourist taxes or wifi, because some apartments charge them separately. And be careful with the category: the average is 3.6 stars, but that does not always reflect the real condition; read recent guest comments about noise, elevator or heating.
The months of November, January and February, outside Christmas and the Fallas, are the cheapest. Weekdays are also usually cheaper than the weekend. Avoid March if you don't want to pay more.
The area of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the seafront promenade are the quietest and have the most space. You have parks, wide promenades and quick access to the beach, although you will need transport to go to the historic center.
Metro lines 3 and 5 connect the airport with the center in about twenty minutes, with stops at Xàtiva or Colón. There are also shuttle buses, but the metro is faster and cheaper. A taxi costs about 25 euros.
Most require an advance payment or a card to guarantee the reservation. Free cancellation is usually available only up to 48 or 72 hours before arrival. Always check if they charge a cleaning supplement or tourist taxes.
Yes. In the apartment you have a full kitchen and more independence, but no reception or daily cleaning. The aparthotel offers hotel services, such as 24-hour reception or breakfast, although you usually pay more per night. In Valencia there are 42 aparthotels and more than 1,700 apartments.
