Excursions with locals
Capileira is one of those villages where accommodation makes the difference between a decent vacation and an experience you remember. Here you'll find 24 apartments, the most abundant option, with an average price of 112 euros per night and the lowest at 77. The average category is around 3.1 stars, so don't expect great luxuries, but rather functional and well-located spaces. If you're traveling in a group or as a family, apartments usually come out ahead of hotels, because they give you a kitchen and more square meters for the same money.
As for areas, the village is divided into three historic neighborhoods: el Alto, el Medio and el Bajo. El Barrio Alto is the most authentic and quiet, with steep streets and views of the Mulhacén, but you'll have to climb considerable slopes. El Barrio Medio is the most practical: it's near the main square, the bars and the bus stop that goes up to the Mulhacén. El Barrio Bajo, next to the river, is the flattest and brightest, ideal if walking on a slope bothers you. Apartments like Muley Hacén or Apartamentos Rurales Las Chimeneas are spread across these areas, so pay close attention to the exact location before booking, because in Capileira the difference between one street and another can be ten minutes of climbing.
To get around, the best option is to arrive by car via the A-348 from Órgiva or via the Alpujarra road from Lanjarón. Parking is difficult in the center, but many accommodations offer a space or indicate nearby areas. If you come by bus, the Granada-Capileira line stops in el Barrio Medio, and from there almost everything is within walking distance. As for prices, the months of July and August are the most expensive and in highest demand; on the other hand, May, June, September and October offer the best balance between weather and rates. They also drop quite a bit during the week, from Monday to Thursday, compared to the weekend. Before booking, check whether the apartment has heating (in winter it gets really cold), whether it includes bed linen and towels, and whether the kitchen is fully equipped, because some rural accommodations are basic in that regard. It's also worth confirming whether the price includes final cleaning or whether they charge you separately for it, which is common in this area.
The months from November to March, outside long weekends and Christmas, are the cheapest, with rates that can be around 77 euros per night. Weekdays at any time of year also tend to be cheaper than weekends.
El Barrio Bajo, next to the river, is the most recommended option because it is the flattest area with the fewest slopes. Avoid el Barrio Alto, since its steep streets and stairs can be a serious problem for walking.
You can take a bus from Granada; the line that reaches Capileira passes through Órgiva and takes about two hours. The bus stops in el Barrio Medio, from where most accommodations are less than ten minutes away on foot, although some require climbing slopes.
Most require an advance payment or a card to guarantee the reservation, and free cancellation is usually limited to a few days before arrival. Many also charge a final cleaning fee separately, so check the fine print before confirming.
Yes, although both options are similar, vacation homes tend to be larger and have private outdoor space, ideal for large groups. Apartments are more compact and are often in shared buildings, but they usually have a more affordable price per night.
