Can Picafort is a destination in the bay of Alcudia that is divided between the urban core, the Son Bauló area and the far end toward the port. Staying in the center puts you right by the main beach and the seafront promenade, with supermarkets, pharmacies and restaurants open all year round. Son Bauló, to the south, is quieter and more residential, with small coves and direct access to the hiking route that goes toward the cape des Pinar; there apartments tend to have more square meters and a garden. To the north, near the marina, you will find hotels with more services and sea views, but also more noise in high season due to boat traffic and terraces. If you come as a family, the area between Can Picafort beach and the pine grove is the most practical; if you are looking for silence, head toward Son Bauló or the inland residential developments, where holiday homes and villas are five minutes by car from the sand.
Prices vary quite a bit depending on the month. In June and September the average cost drops compared with July and August, and that is when you find deals on apartments and houses with a pool. Out of season, from October to April, many accommodations close, but those that open (especially hotels and some aparthotels) have rates well below the annual average. To get there, the usual way is to fly to Palma de Mallorca and take the MA-13 motorway to Inca and then the Muro road; the journey is about 45 minutes. There is also a direct bus from the airport (line A32) that stops in the center, although less frequently than the ones going to Alcudia. Once there, getting around on foot is enough for the beach and the promenade, but to go to the northern coves or the port of Alcudia you need a car or taxi; renting bicycles is a convenient option in summer.
Before booking, check three things. First, whether the accommodation has real air conditioning or only a fan, because July nights can be hot. Second, the cancellation policy: many apartments require prepayment and do not refund if you cancel less than a week in advance. Third, whether the price includes final cleaning and bed linen, something that is not always clear in houses and villas. It is also worth checking whether there is an elevator in apartment buildings, because many are three or four stories with no elevator. As for the category, the area's average is 3.6 stars, so do not expect luxuries in three-star hotels; the most carefully kept establishments tend to be boutique hotels and renovated aparthotels. Among those with repeat guests are Galaxia Boutique Hotel, Africamar, Maracaibo Aparthotel and Acapulco Apartments, all with good value for money if you book in advance.
The average price is around 398 euros per night, but the lowest you can find is 83 euros. It tends to be cheaper in June and September, and much more so in low season, although then many accommodations are closed.
If you want beach and atmosphere, July and August are the busiest months, with heat and everything open. For a balance between good weather and fewer people, May, June and September are ideal, with pleasant temperatures and lower prices.
The center is the most practical due to its proximity to the beach and services, but it can be noisy. Son Bauló is quieter and more family-friendly, ideal for resting, and the port is better if you want restaurants and nightlife, although with more activity.
From Palma airport, by car it takes about 45 minutes via the MA-13 motorway and then the Muro road; there is also a direct bus. Once there, you can easily reach the beach and the promenade on foot, but for excursions you need a car or bicycle.
Always check the cancellation policy, because many apartments charge in advance and do not refund if you cancel late. Also check whether the price includes final cleaning, bed linen and whether there is an elevator, because it is not always included or available.
